Iowa Freedom Rally/Picnic

by

http://www.channel3000.com:80/traffic/19939571/detail.html
Crash is unfortunate, lack of gear is unfortunate, bad group riding is unfortunate, but calling the Iowa Freedom Rally a Picnic is FUNNY!!

Huh?

by Farmer

No mention in the article about Iowa Abates freedom rally,It said they were headed to an annual picnic in Onalaska, which is north of LaCrosse,in Wisconsin.

We have plenty of fools of our own in Iowa,Don't need to get the credit for anyone else's.

I have been at the Iowa Freedom Rally several times. It is no picnic,I quit going when I decided it was mostly a clusterfuck of Fools with Attitudes.

Pennsylvillains

by murdercycles

Butchie, Scuzzo and I had Friday off, so we decided to ride. Had no destination, Butch wanted PA and I was leaning towards Bentley's in Maine.
Weather patterns indicated West was Best.

Got a late start, so we hit I84 to Port Jervis and got some gas, full service.
First stop was the highest point in New Jersey.
Veteran's Memorial Tower.
[linked image]
The we explored Sussex County for Villes. If you have ever been on the NJ Turnpike, you would not comprehend that Jersey could be this nice.

My brain did a somersalt when I saw this in Beemerville, NJ. Another Grand Central Terminal Eagle!!!! I spotted it at a petting zoo.
[linked image]
Got a couple kills and then a late lunch in Blairtown. Stephanie said they filmed a scene from "Friday the 13th" in her diner.

[linked image]

Crossed into Pennsylvania over a narrow steelgrate bridge from Belvidere into Bridgeton. Slammed around the 15 mph turns surrounding Stroudsburg and got a few Villes.
[linked image]

Firecrackers on the corner.
[linked image]

Figured Stoudsburg would be a good place to shack up for the night. While we were reconning Main Street, we saw two young dudes hammering a pair of QCB style Sporties. They showed us the way to the Minisink Hotel, an 1880's style roadhouse/resort hotel.
[linked image]

Cheap food and a good jukebox.
[linked image]

Crashed at Days Inn.
[linked image]

Saturday we hit the road heading North. The plan was to hook up with Camera Steve in VT.
Road food, ville flavored.
[linked image]

Strange Hippie commune in Lordville, NY on the banks of the Delaware.
[linked image]

NY30 is a kickass road of 75 mph sweepers, no traffic and beautiful waterfront vistas. Highly recommended for the full length.
[linked image]

[linked image]

Scuzzo had to split off in Grand Gorge, NY to see the wife.
[linked image]

We kept up 30 to Amsterdam, the unglamorous one. By the time we hit Ballston Spa and gassed up, we realized I was broke. Another night on the road was not feasible. Cashed out at a Stewart's and headed home. Camera Steve was in VT near the CT river, we could not make the hook up.

Was able to find the controversial Maltaville sign.
[linked image] Looks like it was down during the construction of the most ridiculous collection of traffic circles since London.

Had to outrun the cops in Johnsonville, NY and we sped across the state line into the lower corner of VT. blasted Rt 9 to Jacksonville, our last hit of the weekend.
[linked image]

Saw Springfield, MA's fireworks above the river next to I91. Pretty close to the explosions as we rode by.
[linked image]

23 villes and 748 miles of freedom. I hope Steve does well tomorrow in VT. VT signs are weak.
Ray in CT

If you guys needed a place to crash I was around. My door's always open. Hell looks like a damn good run! Glad you guys had fun.

Freebie... Zip, Zero, Nada....

by

We visited my wifes family last weekend adn mentioned that we needed to find a Lawn Mower for the new place and her Aunt gave us this becuase she "didn't need it anymore" It retails over $300!
So I took a couple hours today at the garage and cleaned it up. Cleaned out the badly varnished carb, and got it running today. Need a couple adjustments to make the Drive Line work. And sharpen the blade. But the Easy Start works GREAT.
Funny part is that our landlords brother (who my wife works with) brought over one of the Exact Same mowers for us to use cuase he "didn't need it anymore" also! I'm tempted to sell the Freebie and use the 2nd one.

There's also a basic Sears/Craftsman I need to work on down there. Doesn't run and that's the reason we were looking for one.

Don Q's next bike? Anyone?

by Spanky

My Dad has sitting in his shed now a T500 Suzuki in what looks like factory road racing trim. Dad is holding it for someone who lost storage and needs money. What is this machine worth? I'm not sure if there is a title, it's running, and looks pretty good.

Here's what I see.

Oversized drum brakes
Huge forks
Road racing tank (endurance sized)
Bump stop tail section
Has a headlight, no fairing.
2 stroke twin
Has flat bars on it, will need clip-ons.
Fresh paint and graphics.
Steering head bearings are shot, can be ridden, but would be foolish.
Neck shows T500 - 66238 that's it.

I'll get pictures of it as soon as I can. I can get you in touch with the owner, would make a great vintage track bike.

I'd hate to see this go to someone who wouldn't keep it in good condition. The current owner is not known for making good decisions with this type of stuff, and could even possibly cut it up.

Let me know if you or someone you know would want it.

I love the clean lines, and innotive style of a brand new build. There is nothing that I dislike about that one,,the jackshaft is clean as a whistle. It certianly solves the problem of having the driveline off center, I never liked the bikes that are built looking like they dog track. Thanks for the pics!

Before anything else,It was plugged big time.Little four-holed rubber washer was shot.Full flow now.
Might need to adjust float level some more.Doesn't seem to be starving for fuel, just getting a miss at the top of each gear.If I take it easy and shift early it acts fine. But this is a competition bike,no taking it easy on the track.LOL

Got the brakes adjusted and working good this morning,Fixed the side stand,It's coming along.

intro,new score,some questions?

by cronx1

i have posted a few times under various alias'es,but have mostly just lurked quietly in the shadows. just picked this s&s clone with a velorex sidehack and I got ZERO experience with this type of set up. i have rode street bikes for twenty years but this is a horse of a different color. ive only put about 100 miles on it since purchase but ive noticed a hard pull to the right when going down the road.ive read up on the proper settings for tow and lean including lun's precision light bulb trick but have yet to try them.i would like to get the rig set up so it steers neutral when moving not pulling a Limbaugh on me. once that is done i would like the option of a "quick release" set up so i can remove and reinstall the hack in a short period. this way i can ride solo during the week but still take my favorite girl(my daughter) for ice cream on sunday. so for my question? there are 4 mounts holding the hack to the frame of the bike.could i leave these mounts intack on the bike frame but remove the cotter keys and bolts as shown in the third photo and remove the car for my solo flights(riding to work).ive been on here since the days of the old CHOPPED board and knew lun and the other side car guys would have the knowledge i lack with this stuff. im a tool and die maker so making/modifing and special brackets or mounts would not be a problem.

Once you have

by Farmer

The adjustments made close to the right specs,it is just a matter of road testing and fine tuning for your specific rig.Lunatic should be along and give you the best answer.Every road is different, and the road crown will effect the way the rig handles. The Honda rig I had was best on our county roads here, they seem to have less crown,The state Hiways seem to have more crown and the rig was not quite as good there. And I could practicly fly on the gravel roads. You will have to comprimise some, and you may not ever acheive completely nuetral steering on every road.

Its a plan

by

onc you have ti set up and aligned properly, there is nothign at all wrong with pulling the four bolts to remove the hack, but do' tbe surprised if when yo put it back on, that somethign ahs changed. I have no diea how, ro why, butsometimes when removed and reinstalled, thye need realignment. INexplicable.
ALSO, if it were me, I would make different lower clamps for the bike. The U clamps that Velroex uses are fine for the upper mounts but NOT the lower ones. IF they rotate, (and they will unless you spot weld them to your frame,) evil handling and possible crashing will result.
If you have acess to a lathe and a mill you can make yourself proper lower clamp/mounts for the bike.

Just got this and have a question...

by

[linked image]

The rear shock absorber air pressure warning light comes on and goes off at random. Air pressure is within the limits (it's at 32 psi). Should I be concerned? Debbie, my wife, said that the tail end felt a little "squirrely" under her. The warning label says that if the light is on, the speed should be reduced to less than 50 mph.

See below:
[linked image]

As you can see, this new ride only has 23,000 on the clock; the shocks can't be shot already, can they?

After the heart attack and the stroke, thought I better start riding a SOFA, don't ya know!

Good to be back!

Random Historical Stickyness...

Great Molasses Flood

[linked image]

also known as the Great Molasses Flood and the Great Boston Molasses Tragedy, occurred on January 15, 1919, in the North End neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts in the United States. A large molasses tank burst, and a wave of molasses rushed through the streets at an estimated 35 mph (56 km/h), killing 21 and injuring 150. The event has entered local folklore, and residents claim that on hot summer days, the area still smells of molasses.[1]

The disaster occurred at the Purity Distilling Company facility on January 15, 1919, an unusually warm day. At the time, molasses was the standard sweetener in the United States. Molasses can also be fermented to produce rum and ethyl alcohol, the active ingredient in other alcoholic beverages and a key component in the manufacturing of munitions at the time.[2] The stored molasses was awaiting transfer to the Purity plant situated between Willow Street and what is now named Evereteze Way in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Near Keany Square,[3] at 529 Commercial Street, a huge molasses tank 50 ft (15 m) tall, 90 ft (27 m) in diameter and containing as much as 2,300,000 US gal (8,700,000 L) collapsed. Witnesses stated that as it collapsed, there was a loud rumbling sound like a machine gun as the rivets shot out of the tank, and that the ground shook as if a train were passing by.[4]
The collapse unleashed an immense wave of molasses between 8 and 15 ft (2.5 to 4.5 m) high, moving at 35 mph (56 km/h), and exerting a pressure of 2 ton/ftē (200 kPa).[5] The molasses wave was of sufficient force to break the girders of the adjacent Boston Elevated Railway\s Atlantic Avenue structure and lift a train off the tracks. Nearby, buildings were swept off their foundations and crushed. Several blocks were flooded to a depth of 2 to 3 feet (60 to 90 cm). As described by author Stephen Puleo,
Molasses, waist deep, covered the street and swirled and bubbled about the wreckage. Here and there struggled a form whether it was animal or human being was impossible to tell. Only an upheaval, a thrashing about in the sticky mass, showed where any life was Horses died like so many flies on sticky fly-paper. The more they struggled, the deeper in the mess they were ensnared. Human beings men and women suffered likewise.[6]
The Boston Globe reported that people were picked up by a rush of air and hurled many feet. Others had debris hurled at them from the rush of sweet-smelling air. A truck was picked up and hurled into Boston Harbor. Approximately 150 were injured; 21 people and several horses were killed some were crushed and drowned by the molasses. The wounded included people, horses, and dogs; coughing fits became one of the most common ailments after the initial blast.
Anthony di Stasio, walking homeward with his sisters from the Michelangelo School, was picked up by the wave and carried, tumbling on its crest, almost as though he were surfing. Then he grounded and the molasses rolled him like a pebble as the wave diminished. He heard his mother call his name and couldn\t answer, his throat was so clogged with the smothering goo. He passed out, then opened his eyes to find three of his sisters staring at him.[

We have several tanks of similar size....

by

where I work. We also have many smaller tanks, some inside the building and some outside. All of them are filled with oil, additives, ethelyn glycol or brake fluid. The only containment on the outside tanks is a block wall about 8" thick and 4' high. I'm pretty sure that if one of those tanks burst the story would be similar.

cut-n-paste (weld) flush fit gas caps?

by

Like this one:

http://www.bitterendchoppers.com/Tanks2.html

I've got an old Guzzi 850T tank in the rafters with a busted cap ear, I've always thought my Guzzi would look cool with a flush aircraft style cap.

I've heard of guys getting a beat up sport bike tank, cutting the cap section out and welding it into the newly cool original tank. Seems like it would be easier to cut a hole and weld/bolt in a specialty cap.

??
http://www.debrix.com/Aluminum-Vented-3-74-Midi-Aero-Gas-Cap-Harley-p/20008-k1.htm

Any input from the fab genii would be cool.

Thanks,

I'd go with Plan "A", were it me..

by

Cutting out a servicable cap from a tank with a similar radius would be easiest (and cheapest).. Take you time cutting out the old one from a possibly crunched sportbike tank, and cut a cardboard template with it. Use the template on the 850T tank and take your time TIG welding in the sportbike cap/bung.
That's how I'd do it, but I've been a TIG welder for 20+ years, so I don't think about it much..

Speaking of that, I've got a couple tabs to weld for Sideshow's other R1100S bike.. Hmmm...

fab process

by Mark

wouldn't it best to cut the hole in his existing tank a little smaller in diameter, then overlay the sourced sportbike tank bung/sheetmetal onto the tank, and weld it as it is overlapped, instead of both pieces the same diameter, male/female, with a butt joint to weld? You could then be cetain that the weld is more substantial, and if desired, gently tap the weld area down to recess it, using heat and a pointed type body hammer, before applying bondo.....?

It looks like you'll be here the 16th, I'll be all hopped up on goofballs that day (I hate dental work).

If you go to Graceland, watch where you park, don't leave anything not locked down, and hopefully you have your carry permit. Graceland is in the part of Memphis called Whitehaven, but even growing up there in the 70s they were trying to change the name. As bad as Memphis is, the stretch of road in front of Graceland is the only place I've seen hookers beat up by a pimp, a car-jacking, drug deals in the open, and a drive-by... just driving past once.

Trying to think of anything else interesting around here. The Pyramid downtown is kinda neat to look at, you'll see it if you take I-40 to or from Ark. If you're here overnight & like blues, there's Beale St. It'll be slow due to the weekday, but it's fairly dangerous on the weekend, anyway.

Metal Museum in Memphis

by Apehanger Hank

There is a metal fabrication museum in Memphis. I was told about it by a friend who is a foreign car restoration fabricator. I'll get the location. Also, the info about Whitehaven is straight up, my Uncle worked in that area for years and it has always had a bad but deserved reputation.
If you get down our way, be sure and give me a holler. If you can't make it by Douglasville, give me a holler when you are going to be in Memphis and maybe we can meet there.

A nice wet ride this afternoon

by StarWolve

My wife and I have been trying to take the time to go out to lunch on the bike, but starter problems have had the bike in the shop the last couple weeks. I finally got the bike back Friday, and we were looking forward to a nice ride out to Sodas Point this afternoon.

When we left, it was beautiful. 77 degrees, and sunny. We had 4 villains targeted, and were on our way across some beautiful backroads along the Lake Ontario shoreline.

By the time we reach Captain Jacks (I can't even say that name without thinking of the "Hey, hey, Captain Jack" marching cadence) we were running into some major storm clouds. Still, apparently a few other weren't scared of the impending rainclouds:
[linked image]

We grabbed some burgers, while enjoying the view of the bay and the lake:
[linked image]

Someone has a really nice location for a flagpole, zoomed in from the above picture:
[linked image]

When we left, it was starting to rain a little. We decided to push on, since Pultneyville was just a little ways up the road. We had already missed one villain on the ride out, and didn't want to come home empty-handed:
[linked image]

Well, after that, the skies really opened up. We decided to abort the hunt for the rest of the villains, and come back another day. I probably would have gone on if it had just been me (which wouldn't have been too smart in just a T-shirt on a rainy day!) but since my wife was with me, we called it a day. To her credit, she didn't complain a bit on the way home.

When I got home, I found that Halley (my wife's kitten) had the laptop all warmed up for me:
[linked image]

She's a little mad that I kicked her off the computer to post this, but she's curled up on my lap now, warming me back up after the cold downpour on the bike. Still a great day - got to eat some decent food, went for a ride with my wife, grabbed another ville, and made it home safe. It'll take more than 60 miles in the rain to ruin that!

Tomorrow, we close on the new house. I don't think I'm going ot have much time to ride this week unless its commuting to work, I'll be too busy moving furniture!

Good hanging out again.

Even if it wasn't on the bikes. We stopped at her Grandmothers and her Aunt gave us a kick ass mower (insert "Freebie" soundbite). Mother-in-Law is bringing it out for us this weekend.

by StarWolve

I forgot to get it after breakfast this morning. We ran into Beff at Walmart, too. I guess that's where everyone hangs out. You didn't miss much riding today. Lummisville was a bust, and Pultneyville is a long way when its pouring! Still though, I had a smile on my face the whole way home!

Glad you guys could make it out for the class reunion. Hopefully when you're out in two weeks we'll have the time and the weather to do some decent riding. I've already got all the ville's around here scouted, and a couple "1-2 hour" loops planned for a few others. Maybe we can even talk my father into riding the 250 again (which is a very funny thing to watch - meatball on a toothpick!!!) and hitting some roads with us!

any headshke issues with the hack? If it headshakes, pin the throttle. That'll pull it right out. OR bolt on a steering damper, but I don't liek the slugish feel of the damper.
Sure is a cool rig. Is the hack brake hooked up?

I have

by

a damper that doesn't really damp much, but no headshake. I felt the added weight and that made the steering a little heavier but control wasn't an issue.

On a longer ride, fatigue would be a problem with a load. I feel the forks wanting to turn in a little. If I ride with just a hand on the throttle, I have to push a little to hold my line.

Purty cool, nonetheless!

check alignment

by

you're aiming for a half inch of toe-in over an 8 foot length. Yu also weant about 2 or 3 degrees of lean out. IF it pulls to the right, its usually a matter of lean out, but the toe-in is worth checking also.
To check toe-in strap a couple of 8 foot long florescent light bulbs to the rig usig bunjee cords. One to the rear wheel of the bike, the other to the sidecar wheel. Make sure the ends of the bulbs are directly across from each other and that the front wheel is perfectly straight on the bike (Especially important since the loop frame tires are the same front and back). YOu shoudl have 1/2 to 3/4 inch of toe in.

Ignition question-78 Honda twinstar 185

by

Trying to resurrect a bike for my neighbor. Standard old jap bike issues. Carb totally varnished up, petrified battery, redefinition of filthy (did I mention it was stored in a livestock building?).

I have the carb soaked out (thank you Berryman's gallon Can of Doom). The battery is an oddball 6 volt (Yuasa #6N12A-2D) but I assumed I should be able to see if I had a spark or not with or without a battery. I have no spark. I obviously need to pull the points cover and check it out. I guess I just figureed by 78 this would be a non-mechanical (pointless) system with nothing for me to clean/file.

Or am I just wrong and do I need a battery to fire this thing?

Also another question... Is therre a more widely available, cheaper alternative to the OEM battery?

Thanks

My build off bike

by Farmer

1971 SL 125
First thing was cleaning up the wiring

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Did the carburator next and this is what it looks like now

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Got to riding it around some and the transmission would lock up at random times bringing me to a sliding stop,a bit unnerving.

So in comes a XR 100 as a doner bike, has poor compression but hopefully a good tranny.

[IMG][linked image][/IMG]

Hope to swap the XR 100 bottom end into the SL frame and use the SL 125 topend to complete the deal

Any one know af a reason it won't work? They sure look the same except the XL has no tach drive.I can live without a tach.

Or

by Wild

pull the engines, pop the side covers, and split the cases. While it sounds like more work, it will be less, with less need for gaskets which are silly $$ for what they are. The stroke and bores are both different so putting the 125 upper end on the 100 will be problematic.

You don't know what the 100s tranny is like, and doing all the work not knowing can set you up for an Oh shit moment.

Same stroke

by Farmer

Info I have found shows both motors have a 49.5 mm stroke.Just found out now that the piston pins are sized differently though 15mm for the 125 and 14mm for the 100.

Not as simple as I had hoped.

Explain your post a bit more for me,are you saying to move the 100 tranny into the 125 cases?

Yes

by

You will have to check the manual, but I think all case bolts are accessible without touching the upper end. The cases split horizontally and the trans main and secondary shafts and gears lift right out. Some Yamabond on the case halves and right back together. Only problem is I can't remember if there is a case bolt that is only accessible once the cylinder is off.

You could lap the valves and do a "bonami" rebuild to get the compression back on he 100....

I started with a K1000 and then accessorized it. You know, lenses filters, flash, etc. A few months ago I came across a used digital K200 for $350 (came with telephoto lens, camera bag, and battery grip). All my lenses fit, and there are so many bells and whistles on this thing, I'm still learning. When you move up, buy a used body and reuse all your stuff. Great way to economize, and you know right away if the shot worked or not. No more missed shots and wasted film/developing costs.

Introduction

by Nadz

...by Reaver's request, and I'm happy to have a new group of hooligans to call my friends!

Couple years ago I enlisted in the Army as a signalman, and worked as a mechanical engineer for a a defense contractor. Now I'm 33 and an Engineer officer, and did some time in the sandbox. I've played with guns and on motor toys all my life, but only got a road a bike a few years ago; waited so long 'cuz I tend to drive everything in full-drift mode and I had to settle down a little! The Buell is perfect: handles well, sounds angry, American but looks exotic, and best of all: requires tinkering. I love thudding around town and canyon-carving, but lately have been going farther and the Villains tour is a great 'scuse to cruise.

So there's life in a nutshell (typed with TWO fingers today- gettin' better faster). If yer ever up in northern NY, drop a line and let's ride. Well, someday anyway- County Line Choppers sez the rocket's probably totaled. We'll see.

Drive fast Take Chances (NOT). -Nadz

I however cannot point fingers at anyone...according to Miss Barbara we have 27 bikes in our possession. Hmmm and here I thought it was only 23.
Some are runners, some are parts whores, all are paid for and they don't eat so I'm happy.
Good to see you back on-line!

Update on Dave - Rider 275

by StarWolve

Stopped at the hospital today during my lunch. Dave is doing well, and wanted to thank everyone for the concern. He's new to the community here, but was glad to know that others were thinking about him.

He talked my ear off about Army stuff, and I had to remind him a couple times to relax, that it will get taken care of. He's going a little stir crazy, but he has his cell phone, and should have his laptop today. I'll be bringing him some magazines to read tomorrow after work. If the docs can take a little bit off his finger splints, he'll have use of his left thumb and first 2 fingers. His left ankle and foot were busted up a lot, and his right thumb is immobilized after surgery on it.

He definitely isn't scared off of riding, and is already thinking about what the next bike may be if insurance totals the Firebolt. I told him to buy it back if he can, and we'll build something together with that killer Buell motor. (He knows I've wanted a to build something around abuell motor for a while now.) He's honestly considering a Uly, which sort of suits the more long distance adventure type riding he's been doing lately, but we'll see what happens with the insurance companies.

I won't comment on the crash, since lawyers and insurance companies are a pain, and I don't want something he may have said used for or against anyone. That being said, I personally hope the drunk bitch who hit him (and apparently had multiple DWI's, and considered leaving the scene) rots in jail.

Dave is still waiting to recover his camera from the bike, but he may have the entire accident on video. His cam was mounted, so we'll see if he has anything from it. It should be an interesting video if its recoverable.

A big (albeit painful!) thumbs up from Dave:

The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Thanks to all...

by Nadz

...my new buddies at GLMC! I'm really feelin the love, it's one of the best things about bein' a biker. And I AM still a biker, just winter came a little early this year! Bonus- now I have some show-and-tell pieces for my unit's motorcycle safety program. Leather is good, y'all. And I'd look like a hockey player if not for the bucket. My hands are AFU but still have skin on 'em.

Saw pics of the bike, and it's gonna take some work. A lotta lotta. Dammit- I'd finally got it just how I liked. But still I feel lucky.

It's killin' me that I won't be with the engineers for our two weeks of fun-in-the-sun after all the prep, but let's see how much I can get done with my one typin/dialin' finger.

Thanks agin' y'all. -Nadz

Nadz.... If you can... do an introduction.

by Reaver (Carters other buddy Dave)

I'm sure it'll be a pain with typing and all, but it will give people an idea who you are, and your bike so when they see you on the board they have some background info.
The basics, Who you are, where you are, what you (used to) ride, Riding style, etc.
