Took a ferry to CT and grabbed some parks in R.I.
Orient Point Lighthouse..
fast catamaran ferry..
Off the stern of the ferry
Sub..
another park..
I was able to find all but the tenth, luckily, I planned for extras in the GPS and found my tenth park.
Was a nice day, and discovered the beauty of Newport...pretty amazing place (though crowded with tourists). The buildings and houses were amazing, some dating back to the 1700's. Anyway that sums up the day....

Was involved with a charity/relay on another site. The relay involves handing off a stuffed ostrich named "pooey" from state to state, through every province in Canada, and eventually on to Australia, India, and Scotland via motorcycle. I volunteered to ride, and coordinate the handoff from CT, the handoff to NJ, as well as the other riders in NY. Here's a few pics of my leg...
The handoff spot..
pooey and Yankee stadium..
Manhattan
Freddy Kreugur!?
Later that night I took pooey for a ride on a panhead..
The next day we rode north and handed pooey off to the next group of riders...
Riding through Manhattan isn't exactly my idea of a "perfect" ride, but felt it needed to be done to represent NY. Pooey saw quite a bit of the state, and NY was well represented by all of the riders.
It was a blast, and I got to meet some of the people from the site.
Thanks for looking...

the pig named "Bacon" I believe. I'm not sure if that was a charity, it may be just a relay thing. There is no schedule that I know of to that one. This was done with a 2 day limit in each state, and the charity is riders.org.

I like this place specifically because there are no politics here. Can we keep it that way? A safe haven from all the tripe, and talking heads copied and pasted ad nauseum. Can get it anywhere and that is why this place is special.

Yakking about your Gov's adventures is a little different than all the politics floating around the net. Now that she has become part of the circus, it's different. Hey, it's okay if you guys want every place on the net to devolve into mud slinging and lines drawn, but I just deleted two other sites off my favorites list. They'll remain off until the election is over. If it sadly happens here, I'm a big boy and know not to open the post. I'd just like one, a single one safe haven away from the rhtoric and anger. Because no matter what, it always devolves into name caling. Neither Liberal nor Conservative is an epithet, but reading blog posts, you would think otherwise.
The middle ground is bikes. Both sides love bikes. Can we just talk about them if no one can agree on anything else?

A blonde heard that milk baths would make her beautiful. She left a note for her milkman to leave 25 gallons of milk. When the milkman read the note, he felt there must be a mistake. He thought she probably meant 2.5 gallons. So he knocked on the door to clarify the point. The blonde came to the door and the milkman said, 'I found your note asking me to leave 25 gallons of milk. Did you mean 2.5 gallons?'
The blonde said, 'No, I want 25 gallons. I'm going to fill my bathtub up with milk and take a milk bath so I can look young and beautiful again.'
The milkman asked, 'Do you want it pasteurized?'
The blonde said, 'No, just up to my boobs. I can splash it on my eyes

rayna and myself are thinking about heading to ak from sacramento ca next year. we'll be leaving sometime around mid june and will be riding a couple of old rigid shovels.
so here's what i want to know. how are the road now-a-days?
what is the lodging/camping like?
are there alot of gas stations? our tanks are 3 1/2 gallon and we can get about 90 to a hundred to the tankfull. so if need be we'll take along extra.
what do we need to get across the border? i've read quit a few different things over the last year and i want to know from someone that has actually crossed.
do we need to worry about wildife much?
we're only going to juneau and i'm figuring it's going to take us 6 or seven days to get there and then stay there about three days (sightseeing and whatnot) then about eight or nine to get back(again sightseeing)
any and all info will be greatly appreciated.
thanks john.

you would be ok since you are just going to use the ferry, or the marine hiway system they call it,prob without rideing in canada. if you were going to ride the AlCan, you would def need to take gas along. Some places are wide spaced as to getting gasoline. if you have ever had a dwi or such, forget driving into canada.
Posted on Aug 25, 2008, 1:27 AM from IP address 71.52.239.240
Only thingk I can add is about border crossings. All I've needed has been a drivers license. BUT if you have EVER had a DWI, don't even try to get it, you won't get in.

i'm just wondering what paperwork we'll need to cross?
we'll be riding the al-can hwy. so it looks like we'll be carrying gas along on this trip. our loosely based plans are to cross in idaho or montana then head to calgary then to the al-can hwy. stay in juneau for maybe three days then head back and cross over in port angles wa. then hit hwy 101 and ride the coast down to fort bragg then home. should be a good trip.
thanks for the info.

You might get into Canada next year without a passport, but good luck getting back into the US without one. Unless the government once again postpones the requirement due to border state whining...

it is a n ice ride for sure, but you will have to take the ferry from haines to get there. enjoy your trip, and as for the bears, just keep your eyes open and dont camp with food that is accessible.

When I brought a bike back from Canada, I called US customs and asked them what would be required of me upon return. Canada wasn't really interested when I crossed at Sarnia. Just a few questions, but I had told them I was returning that day so that might be the reason.
Have fun.

Lots more to do there. Juneau is nothing more than a tourist trap (unless you have friends or relatives there, of course).... Some of these places cannot be reached by road, you can only get to them from the air or by boat... I don't recall if that's one of them.....
Go apply for your passport. Makes border crossing so much easier. When I crossed this year (6 times), it made it swift. I got questioned about weapons, felonies, etc., "did anyone ask you to bring something in for them?", "ever been refused entry into Canada before?", "What's the purpose of your visit, and how long are you staying?" ... Lots of questions on the lower-48 border. CA-AK border? Not so much.
The main highways up to AK including the Alcan are good. Some gravelly construction areas; usually escorted - go to the head of the line. They let m/cs go first.
If you're only getting 100 miles to the tank, I think you'd better bring along a couple 2 1/2 gal. cans. You'll probably need it in No. BC.
There is a lot of wildlife up there. I assume if your riding shovelheads, you won't be tearing-ass around the highways like we did, so it shouldn't be a problem. Your biggest problem will be getting your camera out fast enough to shoot them.
Luckily in June & July you needn't worry about nighttime - there isn't any.
I saw lots of Harleys headed that way and back. Seems like the thing to do.
One more note: gas prices suck in CA.
neat of you to show that pic of the gunmount. they mount a recoiless rifle to shoot down the snow cornesses trying to keep the avalananches down, or less damage any way.

I needed a break from work, and thinking about work, so I went for a ride. I left Friday night, taking my youngest with me, and headed for MI. We got 100 miles away and stopped for gas. No credit card, and $40 to last the whole weekend. Shit. Went back home, after gathering another bonus for the Buffalo. Got home at 1:30 am. Slept until 9:30, f'ed around the house and decided I was going to go for a short ride. I was 8 miles from the house, and turned around to get my towel, because I felt like "making a run".
Left at 2pm Saturday.
Rode 230 miles to the first State Park.
Took a nap at the 11th park from 3:20 - 5:15 am. Slept on the tar with my helmet on, sleeping bag used as a blanket. Everything in the park was soaked with dew, the tar was the driest thing. Kind of reminded me of a man and his horse, I didn't want to leave her side.
Got my 16th and final park at 9:15 am
2pm Sunday I had 1,094 miles on. Another SS1K this year. That was with a nap, 5 fuel stops, 16 parks, and 3 meals sitting down. See Reaver, you can kill 2 birds at once, without overextending yourself. This was no big accomplishment in the world of rallying, but it was a fair pace that most people could accomplish, if they tried. A LOT of riders think it involves a bunch of speeding on interstates to get it done, experienced long distance guys know it's all about staying moving, that's all.
Got home at 7:00 pm. With 1,500 miles on (Including Fri night). I did have to stop for 45 minutes a 100 miles from home for another nap. I was getting the nods pretty bad.
I'm now relaxed and ready for another week in the office.

As I was tired last night, I noticed I forgot a few things.
Ray, that 3 wheeled contraption you posted last week? It must be a kit because I saw another one that looked IDENTICAL to it in Wisconsin Sat. night. It was parked at a bar across the river from Wabasha. Black truck rims, ugly 2 person seat, mud flaps etc... it looked too close not to be a kit.
I rode right by where Gary Klinker lives.
I took a nap in New Ulm, MN on the way home because I was falling asleep. I was sleeping in the lawn of a bank next to the bike when a guy walked up to ask me if I went to the Very Boring Rally over the weekend. I told him no, and then explained that I rode through the night, and was tired. He explained to me it happened to him once. He left. I laid there awake wondering why he took the time to stop, get out of his car, walk over to me, and ask me a question. YOU HAD TO WAKE ME UP YOU ASSHOLE TO ASK ME A QUESTION?
It's great how cleansing of the mind riding can be.

I can't wait to get time to do my SS1K. I have everything pretty well set. I just need the time away from life. My Grand Tour will be a bust. I'll be in Boston for the next 2 weeks and back and forth for the following 2 months.
Another thing that I think might be the difference between you mid-west guys and us Yankees is Space. There's really only about a 10miles between towns here unless you get up into the mountains. So with all the 30mph and multiple singaled intersections in each town. That eats up alot of your momentum. I do have 2 lane roads planned into my route. But the majority of it will be interstate for me.

A couple of weeks ago I hooked him up with a MC safety course. A friend of mine is an instructor and though the classes were booked for the whole summer, he said to stop up about an hour before class started and if there were dropouts, it's a first come first serve. We showed up almost two hours early and were #4 on the list. I thought it could be a wash, but there were 7 spots and 8 prospects so only one person was turned away. I'm glad he got in cause it's over 50 miles over and back, but I didn't stick around in case I made him nervous. I went over to a friends and hung out in a lawn chair.
So, he's been riding around home a bit and if we can get our shit together, we'll be going down the road soon. He's easing into it for sure, but I think he'll get it.
He likes the 550.
I think he's nervous about riding the MUTT, but I told him, it's really no different that any of the other bikes, just louder. I also mentioned to forget about the easy "click" shifter. This one takes a big yank.
WHOOOAAA, here we go!!!!!!
He made about a dozen trips down the lane and back, about 3 miles total I guess, and he did really good with the "U" turns. Only put his foot down once so it did some good for his confidence level. This will be the bike he goes down the road on cause the 550 still has the orignal rubber, and it really aint too good. LOL.
It was such a nice day (wasn't raining yet) so I decided to play stay in the groove for a while. This wasn't easy. The 100 is so short and the straw really messed with my balance.

Hey all...name is Tom and I live just north of Seattle, WA. Just did a 3300 mi. ride with my brother and thought I'd share some pics of this (you see some wierd stuff in Montana). This was in the parking lot of the Little Bighorn Battlefield.
Didn't get a lot of info out of the guy riding/driving it. He either figured I wasn't gonna buy one or he just doesn't like talking to tattoo'd guys that sweat a lot. He did say it is 1 of 3 made so far, and it's still licensed as a bike because "everything is bolt on". Here is what the murdercycles world looked like this week.
I was on the TW200 a few days this week. Thursday night the cops were heavy at the new night spot in town.
I pushed the TW across the street and then rode the "bike trail" (Yuppie talk for restricted use railroad tracks) all the way to my apartments. It was a thrill. Here is the TW the next morning feeling tranquil.
Checked in on Rockford a few times. He is in good spirits. Another week or so in the hospital then He will be spending a few months in a rest home two blocks away from my house.
These wake him up every hour or so, they park outside his window.
Secret Squirrel's mom works at Manchester Honda. We checked out these vintage Hondas when we saw her on Friday.
Saturday we rode to Brooklyn, NYC for the Rumblers hot rod/bike event.
Hollywood went in his lowrider 65.
Grace the pin up model
Hacksaw looking like wilfred Brimley.
Headed home
Later,
Ray
Looks like things are doing ok with your bud in the hospital. As the old story goes, been there, done that. Tell him better days are around the corner. Plus, he gets to hit on the babes at the nursing home.

My gas powered mower has been nothing but a headache since the day it was new. NEVER has ran right. I gave up recently and purchased a brand new Reel Mower, Scott brand, 20 inch cut. Sweeeeet.
If you only have vague memories of reel mowers you really do owe it to yourself to check into a nice new Reel mower. pushes lighter than my 21 inch rear bagger and the grass loves it. A few straggler blades manage to duck down and not get cut but I can live with that. And I did not get the bagger attachment for it yet (or make one). Other issue is that it does not get as close up to the sides of things so weed whacking is still needed. Still I love the thing. Very happy. http://www.cleanairgardening.com/scotclasreel.html
I ordered mine from the local Ace hardware store. No one seems to want to stock them anymore. Though I bet they are ready for a comeback as folks think green a bit more.
We also have a large compost pile behind the house and a rain barrel to gather rainwater that Donna also pours bathwater into. The soap keeps the bugs away and the plants don't mind it at all. No pesticides.

It was on sale....not exactly like that one U posted but similiar & ya, 20 incher (or maybe it was 19") I know it was the next size up from the 16 incher....but they R sweet. This one has the solid rear roller wheel instead of those outriggers like the one U have.
I am sure U'r is probably a bit higher quality.

We have a local Sod Farm that distributes all over New England. They use gangs of reel mowers towed behind tractors. It's very good cut for the grass so I hear. Maybe after Starwolves troubles we should pitch in an get him one
Still today very grateful to Farmer for the loan of the bike. The other riders had their rides certified and it came in at well over 1000 miles. Its funner to read at 998 though so I let it lay at that.

this one really caught my eye. This is NOT a late model sportbike, but is actually a heavily modified early 80's XS1100 (Let me add right now that 'vintage' is a relative term with guys like Chris and Dan R around. They have some REALLY classic bikes in their stables).
Wild mods on this old XS1100 though. Wow.

It was getting later when I got to Niobrara,so i grabbed the picture and ran.Wasted time at Gavins point trying to find a Lewis and Clark recreation area sign on the NE side.Found the South Shore one and called it good.It was getting dark by the time I got to Ponca,Gassed up there and ran for home. That time of twilight after the sun goes down is sure hard to see in.The first 10 miles out of Ponca were freshly milled and I could'nt see s--t.Pulled the Sportster around pretty good.Lot's of rough roads in Nebraska, poorly maintained recreation areas.Signs up stating minimun maintenence due to budget cuts.Campsites unmown, access roads rough and full of holes. Some nice places just being left to fall apart.

I just picked up an almost complete 83 suzuki gs 750e that im parting out. What you see is whats there. This bike was ran last year and has been sittin since, a couple body fairings are missing along with the air box. Rear caliper was dragging a bit but front was free. The stock mikuni carbs look good but im sure need cleaned. Engine turns freely and all electics are there. See pics and ask for more if you want them. More discriptions will be given for the specific part you need.

I hate the mall, so I try to stay away from there on weekends, but we made a decision to limit trips and since I was at Lowe's getting more honey do stuff...Barb said I could sidetrack. Anyway, I walked over to the magazine rack to check on the MC/hot rod rags and lo and behold they have started carrying "Back Steet Heros" again. I haven't seen it in 2 or 3 years. I know why, the cover price was $12.99 seems the dollar is not as strong as it used to be.
On a side note, check out the current copy of Popular Mechanics which is still a pretty cheap publication and eyeball the motorcycle thing on the cover. I am not going to let it out of the bag, but your body is part of the construction. I personally would like to have one, not sure how well I could adapt to it. It looks like something out of Star Wars.

The boy has been reading my chopper magazines for months but not saying much, but the other night he asked if we could start looking for parts to build his own bike from scratch. A big hell yes was my responce.
Poor kid doesn't know a running motorcycle can be bought. After watching me tinker and fix my own, it must have finally rubbed off on him.
