Yes it is a street sign and I figured they wouldn't count. Found the 2 towns below with street signs and nothing else usable.

Perhaps you need a better list.

Sunrise is the birthplace of Richard Widmark and home to the Sunrise Bible Church, established in 1853.

Stark has the actual green signs on each side of the town, just no businesses.

Andree, while listed on maps as a town, has no proper town signs. Only the one lone steet sign next to the plowed field.

I'll bet your list doesn't have Smithville Minnesota either?

Roads

Yes the road from Sunrise to Stark was a road worth traveling. As was Highway 65 between the fiction town of Ubet, WI and Star Prarie. Both of which I wouldn't have found if not for the tour.

Which to me is the whole point, turning otherwise boring trips into meandering rides with the occasional unexpected pleasure. Like finding the Richard Widmark museum, or the Franconia Sculpture Park, or seeing the flock of turkeys strutting around the field in Wisconsin, or finding a road that winds along a river through the trees and moves your soul.

Sounds like we were hitting some of the same towns. I somehow missed Sunrise but made it to Stark - I don't know what a Garmin town is but I don't think my Garmin even knew where Stark was. The town had a large bar and a nice church - unfortunately the church was named after some other near town with a prettier name.

Ruling

Well I am glad this situation and ruling came out early in the ride.

My brain says I am in a small town with no businesses, and this is a sign ( other than town limit or PO) that has the town name on it...looks good to me.

For the rules add no street signs to the signs that cannot be used. I can see the reason for no street signs now...in a major city one could probably find street signs for many, many USA cities. But when in a one horse town with no other signs..that street sign looks awfully good!!!

Battle Buell

Made some progress on the Booze-broken Battle-Buell today. (This was the bike that Nadz was hit on by a drunken driver a few years ago.)

Stripped down the front end:

Replaced the subframe, oil cooler, and both left side air scoops:

Put the new front end together:

Started reconnecting everything up front:

I'll probably need some help with the wiring from Nadz, but he didn't change a whole lot, just the lighting and heated grips from what I can tell.

The other small victory was getting the left rider peg bolts extracted from the frame without damaging the threads. They snapped off in the wreck. I've been hitting them with PB Blaster for a couple days, and one I had to drill out and use an extractor, but the other I was able to drive out with a screw driver and hammer by tapping it in circles:

I'll probably finish up the controls this weekend, and make a new list of parts that I still need to source. Minor things now, like brakes switches, a few replacement connectors, the brackets for the fuse blocks, etc.

Parts availability?

Are you still able to get parts from HD? When the Motor Company discontinued the Buell line they stated they would continue to honor warranty claims.

Not a whole lot left

There are some parts available through HD - but I get most of my parts from eBay or Badweb (the Buell message board), and American Sport Bike sells a lot of Buell parts.

I know I won't be able to keep it running forever, but it still has a lot of life left in it. As long as I can keep from getting hit by drunk drivers on this, it should last a while!

You didn't really think I'd go through my whole R&R leave without at least a couple GT rides, did you?

Today we had a record 90 degree day in Syracuse, NY. I had been looking for a nice mural for the last few days, and was hoping to find one at the Dinosaur BBQ, but their mural doesn't have Syracuse written on it. This one is an old one near the highway though:

After that, I took a spin through Solvay, but I couldn't find anything really "neat" to shoot, so the Solvay Bank will have to do for now:

From there, I headed over to Skaneateles. (pronounced "skinny-atlas") I knew the fire department would be an easy photo, but decided to look for the "Aerodrome" instead. How many places still call them Aerodromes?!

The last stop of the day was Auburn, NY. Home of the first electric chair execution! They're rather proud of that, and the "back-up" electric chair is actually in one of the bars in town. The same bar also has a miniature electric chair with a doll in it, and for a few quarters you can electrocute the miniature... he shakes around and smokes a bit. I'll have to make another trip back there and take a video of it in action, but it's rather amusing in a sick sort of way. Anyways, I was able to get a shot in front of the State Prison, which is in "downtown" Auburn:

That's all for now - hopefully we'll have another nice day before I have to go back to Afghanistan, but I'll be hitting them hard when I get home in August.

Guzzi frame question

If you've read my blog lately, you've noticed that I've been pulling my hair out over the problems with my aging airhead sidecar tugs. Guzzis are starting to look tempting, especially with the "fire sale" prices. But I've only seen sidecar mounts for the Cali variants, and their ergonomics didn't agree with me. Then I noticed that DMC listed a subframe for the "spine" framed V11 Sport. Haven't seen any V11 Sports for sale, but the frame looks similar to the 1100 and 1200 Sports, Brevas, and Norges. Noting that there's a lot of Guzzi knowledge here, thought I'd ask the question: What big block Guzzi's shared the V11 Sport's frame? And Lee, being you've hack'd Guzzis before, any advice as to what model Is easiest and works best?

Tonti frames are easiest to put a hack on

Which covers teh T, T3, G5, G3, Californias, jackals, bassas, Stone, EV, Spada etc. Does not cover the Centauro, Norge, Breva, etc.
I'd be leery of aftermarket subframe kits, I sure have seem some crappy ones. And they cost a LOT for such crappy stuff.

I agree, the Tonti frames are easier. But unfortunately Guzzi hasn't updated them and doesn't build standards like the G5 anymore. So if I want something comfy that ain't a cruiser in a Guzzi I'm stick with a "spine" frame.

I suspect that if you could find all the parts you could make a new Cali into a G5. 12 years ago when I was looking at a Jackal someone told me they'd converted one to G5 foot controls, cost 500 year 2000 dollars just to do that. So I don't think improving a Cali's ergos with old G5/SP parts is a viable proposition. Besides, the best deals seem to be on the 1100/1200 Brevas.

Yes, but I want to start with a sidecar "tug" made in this century. No point in buying a new or late model Conti and then hanging twenty year old bars, foot controls, seat, etc. on it. It's much easier to start with a late model standard and adapt it to a sidecar.

A Guzzi would certainly be easier than my F800

Still no fix for the failing rear wheel bearings on my BMW F800S, so it may never get hack'd. If I buy a new Guzzi, I'd probably ride it for at least a season before voiding the warranty by hack'n it.

My aging airhead tugs need replacement now, but I haven't found much in the way of used Guzzi from this millenium for sale. So I'll probably buy a new left over Guzzi and ride it solo for at least a year just in case I get a lemon that needs lots of $$$ warranty work. Looking at other tugs too, but the left over Guzzis seem like the best deal.

GLMC at Moonshine!

Got back from the Moonshine lunch run this afternoon. Scott and I rode down with our friend TL on Friday for the banquet Friday night in Casey, IL and the burgers on Saturday at Moonshine. Jeff K was there with his friend Brian, and Breeze and Vanessa made it there from Omaha (would like to hear from them how the trip back home was???) Overall the weather was windy and rainy, and for us the last 150 miles home today were hovering around the 42 degree mark.

One of the pictures shows a young lady named Pillion Munchkin who celebrated her 13th birthday on April 13th at Moonshine. She won a special award for attending her 5th straight Moonshine Rally with her dad. There was a young boy from Rochester sitting at our table and he looked at his dad and said, "Only 4 more trips until I can win that!!" Maybe this is something Shooter's Haley can bring up at the next family motorcycle meeting.

Off topic, about trucks, Diana I am looking at you

I was at an auction, recently, started bidding on a Semi Tractor, own it cheap, drove it home, hey I made it!

Anyhow, near as I can tell, Consolidated Freightways, Freightliner FLD 120? 1989 I think, no paperwork has arrived yet.

3208? Cat, has an inter-cooler, but very little options

7 speed Fuller I think, no ranges, Governor runs out at 65 MPH, seems to have a lot of power.

Radio nope,
Fuel guage, nope
oil guage, nope
A/c and heater, yes, and here is the surprise A/C works!Have not tried the heater.

Someone installed a newer air seat that works well,and is comfortable

Pretty Spartan, needs an exhaust pipe replaced under the cab

Has an air axle behind the driver, no spring up, kind of tricky to drive with no trailer, getting the right air pressure to keep the tag from sliding the brakes, and still not spin the wheels on the driver axle.The air axle has a knob by the seat,that you can adjust while driving,I don't think this is legal in South Dakota, need to change that.

Anyhow, any light you can shed on this mysterious truck would be nice.

Rides pretty rough with no trailer, but I am hoping to score a 30 foot grain trailer, my hauling generally is 10 miles or less, 650 legal bushels would streamline my operation!

The CF trucks were real basic- at one time they used a switch instead of an ignition key! They were kinda like Guzzis- even used round headlights long after all the other trucks went to rectangular ones. The air tag saves on fuel, and it'd be nice with a lift so you could raise the tag axle when running empty. As for the valve, the pressure is critical... A little experimentation and you'll figure out the right setting. IIRC, SD will sell you a permit for an axle air pressure control in the cab, think it costs less than $100. MN bans cab controls completely, in case you visit our land of 10,000+ lakes and a few loons. The engine is probably a Cat 3406, nothing wrong with them. Does it have an air starter? The FLD cab is quite durable, I know of one big trucking company that stocked up on them when Freightliner ended production.

I think the idle is too high, maybe just needs a stronger return spring.

Well that makes me feel a little better, it was cheap, less than $2K

Haley got her GT flag today!!!!! She went with me the first day when I got 9, she was holding my flag and said "Dad why do you get a flag and I don't? I want my own flag."

Me being a super smart Daddy I got to thinking why the heck didn't I register her at the start? She rides around 5000 miles a year with me and she deserves to play!!!!!

Lookin for USA's in KY

This is one of the straighter sections of road that I was on today, and definitely one of the longer sight lines. Over 400 miles, and most of that I was shifting and leaning while Ridge Riding in KY. Didn't get many sites...but had a ton of fun.

Saw a lot of serious tornado damage from the twisters that came thru here a few weeks back.

Loved that video!!!

Inspired me to to ride with my 14 year old boy (races 200/250f C class Harescrambles) during his practice session yesterday. I broke a clutch lever after hitting a tree on his newly purchased 2005 KX250f (gotta buy hand guards before I ride it again) but luckily had a spare lever in basement so we fixed it and rode another hour.
Three hours of trail riding makes an unfit guy sore the next day.

After not riding dirt but a dozen times in the last 20 years I have discovered at 38 years young I gotta practice waaay more.

I have great respect for those guys!!!
At my boys last race a 67 year young man races his pristiene '71 Husqvarna 250. His lap times was very impresive and he could ride the hell out of that old bike. His pit/gas man was 70 years old. It definatly wasn't their first Harescramble.
Seeing older guys still doing it brings a huge smile to my face.

City Names not in city limits

Stone Mountain Park is about 5 miles from the city of Stone Mountain. Asheville Regional Airport is about 15 miles from the city of Asheville. Atlanta International Raceway is about 40 miles from the city of Atlanta. They are all city names of valid cities, but I presume these are all unacceptable.

Reality is, It's impossible for me to validate every single photo submitted. (Although I've been to Stone Mountian & Atlanta Motor Speedway & know their locations!) The following is copied from the rules. It's pretty clear, it says IN each town.

You will be looking for town names that begin with the letters U, S, or A. IN each town, take a picture of your bike, your rally towel, and a something that has the town name on it. No Post Offices or City limit signs.

I do not want the green signs or the signs at the edge of town that the locals put up. I agree, some of those that the locals put up are very nice & would normally fit the spirit of the Grand Tour. The purpose is to get you into town....look around, hopefully find a building, mural, business that has character. I'm trying to discourage just chasing town signs. ie, Stop on the hiway, shoot your picture, then turn around & head for the next sign.

Some more photos from Afghanistan

I was getting a little stir crazy being cooped up in the office, so decided to take a trip with one of our teams to work on some issues the Afghans are having at a remote site. I managed to get a ride in an RG-33, which has a lot more windows than the MATV or Maxpro, so I was able to snap a few more pictures on the way through Mazar-e-Sharif. We were headed back to the same site as my last batch of photos, but this time without the snow. The area actually looks nice (for Afghanistan, anyways) and was greener than I expected it to be.

First, some traffic circles. In the center of each circle, the Afghans build different monuments:

This is why I joined the Army... to determine how to best clean up the mess that the Afghans make. Those puddles aren't lemonade. We moved the latrine container to let the ground dry out - but the Afghans are still using it, even though it's no longer connected to the blackwater tank. Lovely.

Usually think of a flat desert over there but honestly, I've led a pretty sheltered life here in MI.

One thing that don't suprise me is the sewage and the cook/kitchen photos. My youngest son just got back from Nicaragua and he said there was raw sewage and dogs everywhere.

Constantly - I really try to be polite, but I always decline

Afghanistan is similar to Iraq in that any real business needs to be done over a cup of tea or a meal. Since I work with the Afghan Army daily, I am constantly invited to tea and meals with them. The tea I will take, as the water is usually okay. Most locations use a well of some type, which isn't any worse than my well water back home. (except that mine is filtered and has a water softener!)

The meals I will pass on, since I have seen how they are prepared. We are constantly making excuses why we can't attend a meal, but I try to leave my meetings well before the lunch meal, or plan them in the afternoons. It would probably be alright to eat with them, as I know a few mentors who do regularly. However, my former boss picked up a nasty parasite and was sick for a week when he left here.

Bonzai 2012

Hello All;

Bonzai preparation is coming along well. I look forward to presenting a rally that will be a challenge for those of you with a lot of rally experience, yet fun for someone new or relatively new to the game.

The point of this post is simply to beg. Please:

If you are considering participating in the Bonzai Road Rally this year, mail in your entry today, and make your room reservations. The host motel will hold the block of rooms until a month prior to the event (rooms will only be held until April 27!!!). If you are having any trouble finding a room in the area, please contact me and I will do what I can to help.

I have 25 entries in hand at present. I will be sending a list of registered riders to GLMC to post at the Bonzai link soon. I would really like to see the event fill up. That does not seem too likely at this point.

What can you expect?

Bonus locations within approximately a 250 mile radius of Mineral Point, Wisconsin. This would include most of Wisconsin, northern Illinois, northeast Iowa, and southeast Minnesota. Having a detailed road maps of these areas would be an excellent idea.

There will be a number of photo bonuses. You may use Polaroid or digital cameras. As Cruzin had said in an earlier post, the idea of the photo bonus is to prove to those scoring that you were at a specific location. It would be a good idea to be very familiar with the operation of your camera.

I realize that fuel is expensive, and we all have a limited amount of vacation time available. I would urge you to consider spending a day or two of your free time this year at the Bonzai Road Rally.

Back in the US!

Made it home late last night. Had to sprint through a few terminals to catch my last flight, but I made it home!

There's at least 10 different packages spread throughout the dining room, kitchen, and garage... one of these must be my GT flag, the rest are Buell parts!

There's a lip on the cover where the clutch pull sits against it, and it's common for this to be broken off if the clutch is improperly adjusted. The seller never listed that this was trashed on the replacement that I bought. This one is in worse shape than the one that was in the crash - so I'm going to see if my friend can plug the hole on the crashed one with a weld, and then I can see about repairing the replacement over the winter. It's possible to machine a new mounting point on the inside of the cover, and make a replacement lip for the clutch, but it's beyond my capabilities right now with the tools I have.

We are pretty easy at the Rally's with the cameras. Bring a Digital take as many pictures as you need to prove you were there. We usualy look at the pictures off your camera. I have you used my smart phone for the last couple Rally's.

The GLMC is pretty lax when it comes to photo requirements, including cell phones, but if you plan to do any other rally's, you will need a digital camera. You might as well get one, learn how to use it, including the date and time stamp, and be ready for any other rally you plan to ride. Just my opinion...Dave Bourdeaux

'Bout 40 mile round trip with the hack'd ST up to Ivanhoe for coffee and internauting. Bike was bucking the headwinds well, but rear seemed hot to touch, improved a bit when I backed off the brake. Stopped in Ivanhoe and oil leaking from rear of engine- is the oil seal I replaced leaking already? Limped home @ 40-50 MPH with no further carnage... Think I'm gonna be depressed.

Got out for a great ride yesterday, on a beautiful day. Little chilly in the AM, but blue skies and sunshine. Worked the OH-IN border, and most of the farm fields are plowed and planted or the farmers were out there at it.

All the little towns I got yesterday ( going to be a lot of church photos) combined with what I collected on my way to a CJ Box book signing in Lexington, KY on Friday' and I'm beyond official finisher status with my count.

Spring has sprung and the games have begun!!!!! Springfield Armory is on my ride wish list. A cool midwest one is Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, IL. The aresenal is really on an island in the Mississippi. They have been running since Christ was a private. Not a big museum but all the old buildings tell the long years of service And a grated bridge to get there from Iowa. Can't wait to see if anyone bagged a bunch of GT pics this weekend!!!!!

If your bike has forks this stand will work for you.

The 2 pieces with rubber on then work together to lift the bike at the bottom of the forks.
One of them goes under the fork bottom and the other one holds the fork from sliding back. I use
this same type of stand on my FJR. Just need a flat spot on the bottom of the fork tube.

Hard to describe how to use but once you figure it out it is quite simple.

Well...

I know how to use it, but I can't remove the axle to get the tire off when using the stand. I thought about drilling a hole in both side plates to get access to it, but then the one pad covers the bolt for the clamp at the bottom of the forks. That would also take most of the strength away. Sooooooo I need to spend a little and get a pin stand that lifts from under the triple tree.

lifting method

On the Strom I have usually use the rear paddock stand (with claw/spindles) and a piece of wood with a scissor jack under the belly... fairly stable but don't lean on it. I have a little Sears motorcycle lift as well if you need to use it.

No frame

The Versys doesn't have a frame up front, the engine is the structure. I have an ATV lift, but it won't work on the Versys. My Yamaha Seca would work on it, because it had two frame tubes under the engine.

Vacation 2012 . . .aim high.

My biggest solo trip so far at 3600 miles. Last year I went 2700. I also have a vacation to Phoenix AZ planned for later in the year to visit family, a 2900 mile trip with a single detour to stand on a corner in Winslow Arizona.

Hilights for the mid-June vacation:
Pike's Peak
Ouray - Durango Colorado
4 corners
Arches NP, Dead horse SP, Canyonlands NP
Saw the Mexican Hat picture Jack put up, that's on the list!
Bonneville Salt Flats
Grand Teton NP
Yellowstone NP
Custer Battlefield
Devil's Tower
Spearfish Canyon, Keystone (Been to the Black Hills too many times to count, always a fun ride)
Badlands by way of Scenic and Imlay

I had plans to clip ND and MN to get 14 states, but decided to cut that out after I added Canyonlands.
Concerns:
Is Canyonlands NP a whole day ride? Looks very challenging.
I'd like to drive through the Sawtooth National Forest, but is there a decent paved road through there?

Missing some Great Roads!

Unless we're trying to make time to get from point A-B, we avoid the Interstate as much as possible. A couple changes I would suggest.

On your way through Cooke City, stop at the Miners Saloon for Lunch or bottle of water. Sitting next to the bar, is a statue of what Lawyers become

At Red Lodge, MT take 308 East to 72 North to 310 South to 14A (a little detour to Shell Falls is worth it!) to I-90. You can backtrack to Custer Battlefield.

From Sheridan take Hiway 14/16 to Gillette.You'll be able to bag a Grand Tour location at Ucross! Be sure to stop in Spotted Horse for a burger. For a bonus, tell me who the famous person is that stops there on his way to Sturgis every year?

From Devils Tower take 24 East to 34 into Bell Fourche, the Center of the Nation.

44 & 18 are much better than I-90 crossing South Dakota.

We've ridden all these roads several times. I promise, you'll be impressed!

With everyone heading West this summer it may get crowded, Marlene & I are going to the Coast. We've tried bagging Crater lake 3 times, once making it to the Ranger station only to be turned away because of snow. Hopefully we'll get it this time.

I usually just plan for interstate, then ask locals where the good roads are, or just see one and take it. I90 really sucks, so I'm rerouting that for sure. I've never been on that road without road construction, and once it had a 7 mile gravel one lane construction zone.

Crater Lake......

about 45 minutes north of Crater Lake is a nice campground. Diamond Lake. Really nice lakeside campground. Dry, as in pit toilets and no showers but there is water available at numerous spigots throughout the campground. We just jumped in the lake to get clean. Quite brisk but clean water. Watch the damn chipmonks though, they are THICK there and they'll get in your gear as your packing up and you'll find one or two every time you dig through. I'm serious, I've never seen as many chipmonks anywhere as there. Maybe it was just a good year for the chipmonk crop but they were everywhere. Brave too. Several would get up on the table as we were eating. Every time I looked at the bike there were several crawling over it. I hope you can make it, it's worth the effort. I don't have my pics on this work computer or I'd throw a few up as incentive.

from my trip there 4 years ago. These pics don't at all do it justice. Standing on the rim and looking out over the lake is pretty spectacular. We did not make the hike down to the boat you can cruise on the lake as it was already booked fully for the day. We did see a lot of red faced huffin' and puffin' folks walking back up though. Guess the trail is kinda steep. Anyway, enjoy the pics and I hope you make it there this year.

Like I said we've tried 3 times. 1st we got turned back because of snow accumulation, 2nd time there were fires in the area & so much smoke you couldn't see anything. 3rd time we got to Grants Pass & met a friend for lunch & ran out of time to go up to the lake. I was working in SoCal at the time & thought I'd have time to run back up before coming back to SoDak. Oh well, there's always "next time"

It's worth the trip if you have time....

The rim road runs completely around the lake and it is MUCH bigger than it looks in the pics. Plenty of places to stop and look/take pics. You can spend a few hours there or could easily enjoy a full day. Take some water and/or lunch, as I recall there was only one facility that sold anything. I didn't go in it but looked like they sold the normal over priced trinkets and maybe some type of food but that was the only place on the rim road. I liked the fact that it wasn't all built up with touristy crap.

I've spent a bit of of time riding in NE, SD and WY, and I strongly agree with everything Sleddog is saying.

The Red Lodge Cafe in Red Lodge is Frump recommended and its also where the locals eat.

I like taking BIA 2 from Buffalo Gap, SD through Pine Ridge Res. to Hwy 44 through Wood, then down to 18 near Winner. Dropping from there down through Spenser, NE then take Outlaw Highway (12) through Niobrara, NE to Sioux City. Much of BIA 2 is not paved but its a big road. I too am a big fan of 44 but YMMV - its not for everyone. Wife and I have had a lot of adventures on that stretch and it only takes an hour or two more then I-90. Make sure to slow down for the small towns ($$).

Also, going out you can run kitty corner across Nebraska from Sioux City through Ord, NE and see some of the Sand Hills. It saves about 50 miles, a gallon or two of gas, and it won't take you any longer then I-80. I'm not a big fan of I-80 in eastern half of Nebraska.

Western Loop

If you should decide to knock the Idaho part of your trip off, I highly recommend the US 191 south from Rock Spings Wy, to Vernal Utah. There are gravel roads from Vernal to Moab, we tried in December,to do that via Jeep, but had to turn back due to snow and gates. Vernal to Rangely Co, and south to Moab is a great route, looks a lot straighter on the map than real life.

The Arches, Dead Horse and Canyon lands all great, But Arches is the most spectacular.Of course we were there in December, no crowds, no motorhomes, heck there was barely Rangers out there.

From Moab you route looks good, and certainly a route I would love to get back on.

Have Fun planning! Oops I am looking at it backward, regardless the routes I mentioned are good ones.

Alt 14 through the Big Horns is a great ride, if the Beartooth is closed for some reason. If it was me I'd avoid Red Lodge to Billings and Billings to Custer Battlefield, The slab is especially boring there, I'd find my way from Red Lodge to Bridger, and then 310 to Lovell and Alt 14 through the Big Horns to Ranchester, then north on 2 lane to the Battlefield, then 212 to Alzada, and come to the Devils Tower from the north, then take Jack's route. Time spent on 2 lanes is seldom boring!

Mokee Dugway

Sawtooth area

Not too sure what you are considering the Sawtooth area. My concept is up near Lowman and Stanley,and that adds pretty many miles to your loop.

The road from ID Hwy 55(Banks-Lowman Rd at N44.08404 W116.11367) is paved and a fun,twisty road to run.Continue on ID Hwy 21 (at Lowman) & 75 over to Challis and US 93 S to get back on route. If you would do this, consider riding down thru Driggs, ID and seeing the backside of the Tetons, before riding up over Teton Pass on Hwy 22 into Jackson. Motels in the Jackson area are not cheap, if you find anything under $100 you are lucky.

Just ride, part of the adventure is finding "your own road."

Clarification on where I'm talking about

Found my own road in Colorado, Hoosier Pass. It broke my front fender and dented a muffler because I had the wrong equipment. If you made a box from the southern border of Idaho to Oakley and Hollister, that's the area I'm talking about.It is just NW of where Utah, Nevada, and Idaho meet.

Signs do NOT need to be on buildings this year, they can be on almost anything stationary.(park bench, flags,water towers, business store fronts etc. However No Post Offices or signs at the edge of town)

Saint Sebastian is still worth one point, first letter of the first word in the name of the town. For instance, Fort Sebastian would not be acceptable but, Sebastain Fort would!

Counties do not count, only towns, cities, or township names. I guess there could be a town named the same as a county & then it would be ok.

another GT Question?

Indian reservations? Just saw that I will be going thru the Ute Mountain Indian Reservation and according to S&T there is no "town". Just wondering... I don't think that one reservation will hurt my score that bad.

Meeting topic

I belive there is a meeting this week for the GLMC. I have a topic I would like brought up and I think we might get the same feedback from other distant members:

Would it be possible to move the Monthly meetings to like Sunday afternoon or something like that?

I think we would get a better attendance. For most of us making it to Watertown on a Wednesday night is not going to happen. In the summer months we could even meet out in South Shore maybe do a ride or something afterwards both dirt and / or street.

I haven't been too motivated to attend the 8pm meetings and dodge the deer on the ride home. But a sunday afternoon meeting would make for a nice ride to Watertown and back!

We have had some meetings at the South Shore riding area last summer, and it is nice to get out of town !

The Discussion

on this topic:

I read all of the comments left here at the meeting last night.

We discussed the idea, and it comes down to this. The President, Steve has a very busy weekend schedule,most of his weekends are already planned through the summer, however, we all agreed, it is a great idea!

The monthly routine meetings are mostly filled with humdrum details,about expenses,and such. What lacks at the meetings is the member participation and idea jam sessions. Since we only schedule 1 hour for the monthly meeting,it does get pretty short.

So, we decided, that as we have done before, the president calls the meeting time and location,which has been South Shore on a few occasions.

As far as a larger member's participation event, such as a Sunday meeting, certainly is a viable option, and a good way for more members to get involved,and put their thoughts and ideas forward, that is what we really need. Tax exempt status etc etc, is not what really ignites the members imagination. Rides, and riding, that is what ignites passion!

So, as a goal, we probably will hold a Meeting during the riding season, JUNE,JULY,August, and would like to see a bunch of members ride on in,for meet and greet,idea jam session,and overall improvements that could be made for the GLMC and the members.

You might think of us like your state legislators, we represent you the members,you have a voice, and we value your views and opinions,however it is not necessary for you to be at the Monthly business meetings.

The BIG difference is: unlike your legislators, we are not squandering your money and Ideas.

Jayd has now been appointed VP, at large, and quite probably Jayd could be in charge of such a meeting. We would welcome that, as new ideas,and procedures are what keeps a club alive!

This forum is a great place to discuss ideas and issues

So let's keep this discussion going!

Let's not forget

The end of year Banquet as a possible meeting, and idea session, along with any of the events.
Certainly all of the officers do not have to be at an event to have good ideas change hands

Quarterly,monthly, whatever works out, maybe one can just fall into place, again the routine monthly meetings are about paying bills, keeping up with tax laws etc etc etc.........

Creativity occurs while blasting down the road, in an event, those are the ideas I want to hear about!

My wife has decided that loud and fast aren't so "cool" when we ride 500 miles in a day. I tried to explain this to her 2 years ago when she bought all this. hehehe

Flood damage?

I don't know. I don't see where flood damage accounts for the cumulative list of common replacement things needed for a bike that's been sitting for 10 years. Seems like someone either inherited a bike or had it sitting in the corner and gave it to a shop to get it running to sell it. Turn signals get the UV fade, the chrome pits, and cracks in the fastener threaded areas keep them from fastening on well. Mirrors get bent, broken, delaminate, or simply loose the socket joint tightness and start to dangle or vibrate going down the road. These are things that when replaced, bring the old bike that was sitting in the sun too long to look like a bike that was better cared for.

Very possible there was a Windjammer on it and the mirrors and turn signals were replaced when getting rid of those hideous things that fortunately did a great job of keeping gauges and headlights out of the weather.

Unless there's something you know about this particular bike that I don't, I don't see much odd about the listing other than what the guy claims to have paid for the service work done and what he thinks it's worth. But for what some shops charge to change tires today, and the hourly labor charge on a rack of 4 old carbs to rebuild, he might not be exaggerating too badly. The shop probably got rid of the lean jetting settings so it's not as cold-blooded, which would make the comment about the bike running better than factory possibly true.

Dakota Dunes was severly flooded last spring, the whole Missori river as very flooded last spring. The bike is from Dakota Dunes. Puts up a red flag to me but I hate spending money. Could be wrong.

Buyer Beware

All points made here valid.

The bottom line is buyer beware.

The floods in Dakota Dunes,required people to evacuate quickly, after they were told repeatedly, they did not have to worry. Many had to leave a lot of their belongings. It was a terrible event,man-controlled flooding, Mother nature supplied the water.

Hopefully never happens again!
