E106's - Rare or Unpopular?

November 17 2006 at 8:39 PM

Trying to put my first grading submission together around some long work days. Trying to find general info on E106's - very few posts, 1 common sale on ebay. Rare or just not well loved? Estimated value of a low-mid range HOF as a nice 10?
Thanks - Will

I think its a little of both. They are scarcer than most of the popular caramel sets. I like them because they are one of the few sets that has Federal League Players. IMO If it was a unique brand (not American Caramel Co.) and didnt have the same photos as many other sets, they would be much more in demand .

The overall quality of e106 leads to lower demand, lower prices, and lower condition survivors, but also less examples overall which makes the set uncommon.

The images are slightly distorted compared to their counterpart poses found in different sets.

Here is what Old Cardboard says:

Year(s) Published: 1915
ACC Designation: E106
Set Name: American Caramel
Card Size (inches): 1-1/2 x 2-3/4
Number of Cards in Set: 48
Est. Value (common; VG): $65

This puts them at the chronological tail end of most of this type of cards. They appear to be both not very common and not very pricey. This status may be due in part to the set not having new poses, simply modifications showing and simulating team changes. The set does reflect the Federal League, and for some reason "they" think that Wagner was a second baseman.

After this set the b&w cards and the strip cards were the primary cards available (well, also after the CJs).

Thanks for the info - boy that was quick! Mine is a Federal Leaguer (Baltimore), given as a gift many years ago. It may hit the b/s/t, so enough said by me.

E106 rare

November 17 2006, 10:49 PM

After tracking eBay for over a year and every major auction house you just don't see that many E106's come up for auction in a graded format. We have price information on 13 of the 48 cards in the set. Most of the auctions are for cards in the lower end of the grading scale SGC 10 & PSA 1. So to conclude they don't come up for auction very often so they must be very hard to find and the highest graded card we have is a PSA 4 so getting them in pristine condition would be practically impossible.

Your conclusions Bobby, apply only to graded cards, correct? The ungraded population, its distribution and pricing is not among the data which you have ready access to - is that also correct?

No harm/no foul here.
No misleading either.

Edited to add:

I certainly do not mean to infer that you would mislead anyone. Heck, what would be your motivation to do that? I know that you are all about helping us, and have expended a tremendous amount of effort, and have met with a tremendous level of success in accomplishing that objective.

I thank you for what you have done, and for the resource which you offer to all of us, both the free resource and the pricing/etc. subscription one.

i've had a few e106's in my life and 2/3 of them were trimmed. my remaining collins is beat to hell. I think they're rarer than we think...comparable to t216's.

Alot of the images in this set were used from previous sets.I think this would be one reason collectors aren't as keen to this collection.I've handled a fair amount of these cards (years ago),so I'm quite fond of them.Since then,I haven't seen very many of them,so I would have to say that it would be both.

My 2 cents,

Love the set, love the team changes. I believe more collectors who collect "high end" cards do not appreciate the set because you rarely find the cards in any condition higher than "Fair." Additionally, as mentioned earlier, the frequency with which they turn up makes completing the set quite difficult and probably frustrates many collectors.

The cards are rare and unpopular...The glossy coating on the front of the cards cause them to crack..Plus I believe that some were folded in half when packaged. I own 46/48 cards with only one graded sgc50 a hand full of 30 and 20's but mostly 10's.

Go Big Six!! 46 out of 48. Which 2 do you lack?? Anyone that close deserves some of us letting go of a singleton to help you complete the set.

I have a few, I think a couple have holes punched in them. And except for that stuff about "graded", "population" and the like, I agree with all above. Anyone fooling with E cards usually starts with E90-1. That is a frustrating set, and I think some collectors either give up on E cards, or they start type collecting.

Or maybe so many folks nowadays are slab collectors, and they don't have much opportunity to collect E106s because so many of those cards are ragged, where they resided in their owner's pants pocket for some time. If some of us with E106s would get them slabbed and offer them for sale, then might we see a big boom in E106s?

I'm down to needing four. They mostly reside in 10s and As.
Like Type 1 Coupons, I haven't seen many nice ones.

Talk about ugly. Look at this horrifying example. Creased and punched. Was there some sort of redemption on these things?

Neither are very pretty, but I enjoy the reference to the Federal League on their backs.

well here are my E106s

November 20 2006, 11:11 PM

My E106s are about as ragged as everyone else's. Took me a few days to dig down to them.

Bob Shannon, I swear my cards weren't folded down the middle last time I saw them, I think your post must have put a curse or hex on them...

And Paul Stratton, my Schaefer is punched like yours, same little cross. Gotta love the Newark Feds.

So I think you guys nailed it, E106s are almost always found folded and beaten, with the gloss fronts cracked. They are seldom pretty enough to get excited about slabbing... So folks that focus on slabbed cards overlook them. And there just aren't that many out there anyway.

Here is one I used to own...I had a Plank also. All beat up pretty well but not creases down the middle.

My only example is very beat up. It's good to hear more information on the set. These are my favorite topics to browse on the board, I wish there were more like this. The E90-1 multi-hundred post topic was phenomenal.

e106's

Joe... Your Crawford looks NM/MT compared to almost all of the others shown.

I thought I remember someone having a really sharp set of these, can't recall who though. Anyone?

Got up to about 20 one time, and gave up. I agree with all said above (both).
Kinda' neat to have some Feds and different teams,
but a low grade e90/92/101/102 looks so much better than a compairable low e106.

Oh, and the "4-punch" Speaker was one I had and sold -- just checked my spead sheet:
Sold for $18.69 -- bought for $15 -- that's a 25% profit !! !!

I was flipping through my Sothebys catalog and theres a complete set of 48 E106 for sale. The cards are generally in the G to VG range but look to be relatively free of creases.

thanks to all

November 21 2006, 9:09 PM

for an informative thread.
Great show and tell and it even stayed on topic.
I must say, mine looks a lot better than most that were posted. Will post scans in the appropriate area when received back. This board is a great resource.

Happy Turkey Day to all - (time to go pack for NY - dinner with all the in/out laws is great, but the annual visit on Black Friday to my favorite card shop is better - need to see if he got in any more Williams Bakery cards, priced with a 2002 guide, like I got last year). Anybody know of any good restaurants in NY for a large group on Friday night? On second thought...leftovers will be fine.

Will

I don't think SCP meant to say this

From their auction description: "Many cards appear trimmed, with a sampling having been graded by GAI"
