Considering a few decent sized purchases, but gentleman only accepts checks/MOs which always worries me. Wanted to know if anyone here has ever dealt with seller?
I have purchased a few things from roomn8 in the past. He is a great seller. Doesn't take PayPal but he shipps very fast and was quick to respond to e-mails.
I realize many board members are skeptical of sellers that don't take PayPal, but I just wanted to offer another perspective. I have tried numerous times on several different computers to sign up for PayPal but without success. Undaunted, I tried to call customer service, but I learned I needed an account to talk to an actual person. So I found another help number on www.paypalsucks.com (PayPal bashers unite!) and called. The person on the other end didn't appear to be interested in helping me, and I was "disconnected" when I became persistent. That's when I gave up on PayPal and I can't believe I'm alone in my frustration ...
A few good sellers don't take PayPal because they've gotten bitten in the ass by them! Years ago I sold a mid-grade '52 Bowman Mantle to a scum that filed with PayPal that he had received a re-print (it was 100% authentic). Not only did my account get debitted but the guy (who shortly thereafter became "non-registered"!) kept the card! Guess some of you guys aren't aware of the class-action suit against PayPal a few years ago...cost them million$$...
scott, i just bought a sgc 84 nm 7 t-206 cy young from him, maybe 6 weeks ago, perfect transaction, also have done biz in the past, very much on the up and up..hope this eases your concern some.
I picked up a T206 Wilhelm from roomn8 back in August and was pleased. Based on my limited experience, the card appears to authentic and unaltered (I'll probably send it and a few others off to SGC when I pick up enough cards to justify the submission), and he shipped pretty promptly. I have bid on a few more of his auctions since.
I was a bit nervous when I purchased a T206 Cobb from him a while back. Great transaction, great communication, well packaged. I would buy again without hesitation
This seller once listed a higher end card that he sold a month or so earlier to someone else. I asked him about it via email. He sent me a somewhat nasty and sarcastic response, which I think sheds a lot of light into what kind of an eBay seller someone is. Needless to say, I will never buy from "roomn8."
Edited to add: Now it looks like this seller has blocked me from bidding on any of his auctions. Real class act.

Thanks for the kind words (almost) everyone. I greatly appreciate and welcome buyers who have integrity and will bend over backwards to provide such respect in return.
Adam, you must be am76. Sorry my response hurt your feelings but, given that you've been a eBay buyer for well over 5 years now, your question implied something repugnant. I'm sure other sellers will understand that given the current anti-seller eBay environment, nipping potential problem transactions in the bud is an unfortunate necessity. And so, Adam or am76, that's why you were blocked. I'm puzzled though... if you would never buy from me as a result of my response, how did you even find out I had blocked you? And why would it even be relevant to you or anyone else? Clearly you have an axe to grind with me and I hope you feel better now having posted here and gotten it off your chest.
On a happier note, thanks again to all of you who posted about your positive experiences with roomn8.
I am about to bid on an auction of yours...I am sure you are a decent seller but no matter what a potential buyer may ask you should respond in a cordial way.
This thread was started by asking if you are a reputable seller and most have said yes. That was good enough for me.
Customer/potential customer is always right...its a different Ebay world now.
Hi Scott.
Actually,I only accept checks or MOs as well...and have bought/sold online since 1993...including to some members here on Net54 more recently...without a problem on my end.
Not everyone accetps Paypal or uses Ebay.
Having seen so many problems with Paypal,I decided a while ago not to use it.
When you accept checks, there is always proof of the seller depositing/cashing it,although the seller might get burned if the check bounces.

I just want to add my voice to the chorus of positive reviews about this seller. I would go further and say that Dan is not only a good seller and that I have not had any problems etc. -- but that he/Roomn8 is one of the best sellers I have dealt with.
BTW this is based on several transactions both on and off eBay.
I have had many pleasant transactions with room8. You have nothing to worry about. Not accepting PayPal should never be a red flag for you. It is not an indicator of the quality of a seller.
Not accepting PayPal should never be a red flag for you. It is not an indicator of the quality of a seller.
Sorry, while this statement might be accurate in the case of this particular seller, it's an irresponsible thing to say. A common thread that runs among cheats and scam artists on eBay is that they do not accept PayPal. So saying that not accepting PayPal should never be a red flag is just false. Just like saying that because someone accepts PayPal it's a guarantee that he's a "good" seller.
RobD. I think there are more successful scams going on which involve Paypal than there are with people sending scammers checks and money orders. People think long and hard before mailing unrecoverable payment to a stranger so you have less successful scams. A lot of people will put zero thought into paying by Paypal and will knowingly enter into a high risk transaction because their credit card company has their back. All a scammer wants is your money and Paypal buyers willingly hand it right over to a scammer. The scammer has your money electronically in seconds and then vanishes without a trace. To scam you with a check or money order the buyer needs a name and address and someplace to cash or deposit your payment. Paypal makes it so easy and convenient for scammers.
Not really looking to have a debate regarding the most popular scamming techniques on eBay, especially when most of the points you make are based on assumptions. Just saying that to make a statement that not accepting PayPal should never be a red flag is inaccurate.
Well let me rephrase then. Not accepting PayPal, in and of itself, is not a red flag for ME. I average about $5000-$7000 in purchases a month on ebay and have made 1000's of purchases there over many years. I have experienced no significant difference between the no-paypal and paypal only sellers. I have never considered that a red flag on its own merit. What I look for when deciding if the seller is a problem is:
Bad feedback
new seller
bad pics
many foreign sellers (particularly China)
over puffed and poorly written descriptions.
No recent sales history
Those are the main things I consider red flags. I do not think my statement was irresponsible, just needed elaboration. Many good sellers I buy from do not take payal. On the card side Leroy, roomn8, and many more come to mind. Same thing on the coin side. Form of payment in and of itself is not enough to bother me. I suppose I would concede that not accepting Paypal combined with a few of the other things I look for could raise my warning light. Truthfully, I have had more problems with the Paypal only sellers in the few transactions that have gone bad, but they also had some of the other warning signs I stated above. I guess we all find our own comfort zone through individual experiences.
