It seems I have read somewhere that an agent (emulsion?) was added prior to each application of color during the printing process. Searched and searched and can't reference the article. Maybe I dreamed it. Anyway, all four of these cards have a glossy area where the next application of ink did not adhere to the card. Although the scan of the Easterly does not show very well, nearly the entire deep red outline has a pronounced glossiness to it. These areas seem to have been very tacky after printing as some exhibit paper loss. Even on this t205 some areas of the green border have a very distinct gloss. Just curious.

T 206 printing is one of the cool mysteries of the hobby ! When I picked these two up from the same person I began to wonder if maybe they were printed, up to a point considering color scheme , in a team concept .

Thanks for responding, maybe I should have put it in the Billy Gilliam thread (smiley face). Another curious thing is that all three of the T206s have Sovereign 350 backs.

The 1st group have true print run inking differences, the Pirates cards on the other hand were part of a large group improperly soaked off with solvents several years ago and are not print variations but poorly executed soaking, John Billingsly had many of these at the time, although he did not commit the foul. There is a Magie with the same "tie dyed" look that has changed hands a few times.

As you you probably know, American Lithographic printed these cards employing a 6-color process.

Upon the initial BROWN (or BLACK) ink application, YELLOW has always been the 2nd inking in this
printing process. RED is usually the last ink to be applied. The following examples are evidence of this.


Application of the Brown ink first, followed by Yellow ink, is illustrated by this proof card of Johnson.
Note....the hint of Yellow subsequently creates the Green backdrop, when the Blue ink is applied.








These three cards illustrate the interim inking stages prior to the final application of the RED ink.
