I can't wait to go to this show. For some reason, I have a feeling it is going to be better than what most people think.

I will be there as well (probably Saturday morning/afternoon)...not sure how much is actually going to be there though. It has been slim pickings for awhile now.

SGC at Hollywood Park

August 20 2008, 8:06 AM

I will be set up at this show accepting submissions to take back to the office. We're excited to be out on the west coast again and look forward to a good show.

I'm waiting for exact table location information from the promoter, but as soon as it's available, I will update this thread. As always, all are encouraged to stop by, say hello, and drop off any cards for grading.

Just wanted to let everyone know that SGC's booth will be in the VIP row near the entrance to the show. As mentioned, I'll be set up and able to accept any cards to take back to the office for grading.

Hope to see some of you this weekend!

I was wrong. Not only did they all have overpriced T206's, but 90% of the raw cards were trimmed. What a waste of time.

I am heading down there tomorrow. I live in Santa Barbara and is it worth a 90 minute car ride? Any quality Pre War graded cards for a decent price?

Just got back from the show, VERY thin crowd. Highlights of
the show was seeing a couple of Net54-ers and stopping by
Memory Lane's table. They were displaying several items from
their current auction including a BEAUTIFUL PSA 9 E93 Standard
Caramel Wagner. SGC and Mastro were there. Lots of ungraded
'50s, '60s and '70s stuff. Very little in the way of quality
Pre-War cards. A couple of dealers I spoke with hadn't yet
broken even. I was there for 1.5 hours and left emptyhanded.
Overall, a BIG disappointment!!!

It was quieter this morning than yesterday, complete opposite of the usual crowd. But the autograph guests were fewer and smaller names (all basketball, and only 3 of them) so that might account for the overall crowd.
I didn't find any cards I was looking for at the National, so I didn't expect anything here and wasn't disappointed. Seemed to be a pretty steady stream of submissions at SGC, occasional at Beckett at the other end, and a bit sparse at Global. PSA wasn't there at all.
No Bill McAvoy, Marty Pritchard or Brian and Bob Marcy this time round, so that made things a lot thinner than usual. I think doing the show over labor day was a bit of a mistake, but I don't think shows in general are what they were just a few years ago. Seems like they are often better suited for dropping off submissions, consignments (Mark T. from Mastro was there) and picking up supplies than for actually buying cards.

I just got back.

August 30 2008, 8:38 PM

Well I just got back. I have not been collecting much these days but heard SGC was going to be there and I also heard this could be the very last one so I thought I would bring some cards for SGC to grade and say hi to old friends. It was very nice to see Adam W, Eric, Anthony (thanks for the help filling out the those sub sheets!), Brain (SGC), David Levin, Mark and quite few dealer friends. I did end up finding a few 1915 CJ's that I needed and a couple of 49 Leaf SP's as well, but other than that not much. Overall I see why this show is dying, not many attendees and that leads to not many great cards either. Still a great place to meet up with old friends and if SGC keeps coming I will keep going!

This is THE worst show to search for autographs. There is one very kind fellow who has a ton of signed 1950's-70's cards, but they're all commons.

Ryan C.: Feel free to pounce on me for posting this in a card-based thread (and my apologies if you don't care)!

Nice to see everyone yesterday

August 31 2008, 10:48 AM

The show really has gone from a respectable regional caliber show to a mall show, with a massive room of dealers selling shiny crap to each other. There are perhaps half a dozen dealers with any (as in 1 or 2) prewar cards for sale, but only 1 or 2 with any appreciable inventory. Roger Neufeldt made the trek from OK for the show so I was able to pick up about 10 exhibits for my postwar sets and I got about 20 more 1971s for that set from another dealer, but otherwise, the show was sparse pickings. Even the postwar tables were average, with very few of the marquee cards and very few regionals. One clown dealer was pricing his raw 1950s inventory from the SMR, which was good for a laugh or two.

I just got back from the show. I debated going but the drive from Santa Barbara was only about 80 minutes, so I decided to go. I got to see Memory Lane's cards and maybe a few other dealers had some ok Pre War cards. I was walking up and down the aisles looking at a table with all Auto/Jersey cards, all new stuff. I was very disappointed in the show. Tons of new stuff and from the looks of it, it looks all the same to me.

I picked up exactly four pre-war cards for about $40 total...(scans to come later) which was nice since I had anticipated not picking up anything (have not bought anything in the last two shows). It was good to see Roger N. but alas, he had nothing for me. The dolt quoting high SMR on raw vg commons was funny but I did find one 1954 Topps Canadian in his $3 box.
