Hello to all visitors! Please visit the NEW Net54 board at
www.Net54baseball.com
You can directly contact the moderator here if you have any questions or comments. Enjoy!
I know a lot of folks don't like to go back to long threads and stuff so I want to show a quick peek of our new forum. Brian McQueen has worked very hard on it and done a fantastic job. Also, Mike Masinick (sp?) has helped in porting over the old info. The rest of it should be ported over in the next day or two and then we will go live. I might run both boards in unison for a few days, so no one gets left out, and then lock this down as a "read only" forum. There WILL be a learning curve for everyone so hang in there...One other thing....When anyone registers they will have to be approved. No more trolls....and everyone except one person would probably be approved to start with.......regards
It will be you and Jim C....
.Hey, I don't like changes either but it was time!! I think/hope this change will be permanent and the last one we have to make....
Leon........
How is posting images to the forum? Does it integrate with Photobucket or something like that as easily as Net54 or is it possible to do that? Just wondering. Looks absolutely great. May have to go that way with the Nonsport forum...........
*See all posts by user - can view all of Ted Z's valuable forum contributions in one place
*Private messaging - will eliminate issues with emails going to spam folders, etc.
*Ability to ignore posts from particular users. Hopefully people who get annoyed with each other will choose this option instead of feeling the need to respond to attack other's posts. That should make the forum a happier place for all of us.
require scans and prices on the BST?
It looks great to me and after a short period of adjustment I am sure it will be fine. No more of the dreaded "Internal Server Error" or "The Forum Owner has blocked your access to this forum."
Thanks Leon, Brian, et al.

Is this new forum going to have a chat room? I'm sure it's not a pressing issue since myself and a handful of others are the only ones that regularly use this one, but I really enjoy the feature.
i was grateful to see that some of the new forum looked the same so
my separation anxiety was quickly ameliorated.
thankfully, i keep Leon's email handy for help when needed.
obviously, a lot of great work has been done on the new forum, and I stand
in awe and with a wee bit of Sloatean fear---but will happily join up!!!
You have some nerve! Coming on here, pretending to be technologically inept, and at the same time, throwing out a word like "ameliorated." You'll send the masses scrambling to dictionary.com!
You guys are my heros. I have given some thought to allowing only registered users to be able see the new board but have backed off of that....so it will be as open as this one....but with the registered users needing to be approved. As I have said,.....I can only think of one person that wouldn't be approved. Everyone else would start with a clean slate. Also, there is a banning option on the new board that will ban someone only for a certain amount of time....in many different increments. I don't think I need to name names on who won't be allowed...
As for the chat...it is a module that I will have to buy and get incorporated but consider it a done deal....It could be a few days out though. I know there are a lot of folks that like that chat option so it will continue. It will only be for registered users.....
As I have said too, there will be a learning curve for everyone.....But I truly believe the new forum will be light years better than this one, technically speaking....
...the individual posts be separated by the poster's name, date of post, etc.? When you scroll down now, all the UserID info is in the left column and all the reading material is in the right column. Are we getting rid of the dual column format for reading a thread? If so, I think it will look a little choppy while reading.
Paul - there is additional info included on the thread list which necessitates the new layout. As a result, the thread starter is included in the same column as the thread title. The most recent poster (new), thread views (new), post time and number of replies all get their own columns.
Barry, don't jump to xanax, our own Dr. Darren D. can offer some great
integrative medicine alternatives.
I am finding cognitive behavioral therapy helpful for my own anxiety regarding this necessary forum change.
JimVB, I wish i were 'ept' (sic) in the technology arena but do find myself
learning much every 5 years or so--about the length of time that I've been on this forum methinks.
JimVB and David, I was thinking Sloatean fear was more like a tautology.
Great fun, as always.
...also, does Network 54 know that we're taking the name with us to a new location? Or is still being somehow sponsored by Network 54? (This isn't like the New Coke people leaving Coca-Cola to start a new company called New Coke, I guess.)
It may have been mentioned already in the thread, but do we have to register on this new forum or will it port over our existing user info? I'm guessing the latter.
Also, could you set up a vintage hockey forum down where the other sports are?
Mike M - you're doing a great job with the archive import (judging by the golf forum) being able to seamlessly translate the embedded images and other html to vBB! Thank you!
As for the name of the new forum it is Net54baseball.com
The name of this hosting site is Network54.com.....
In speaking with lawyers about it there would need to be a confusion to gain business for there to be an issue, is my understanding. We are NOT going to be a hosting company....That is being done by Yahoo.com....I guess anyone can be sued for anything but this is rather trivial. We are a completely different business and don't wish to get into the hosting business....There is a back up plan in place if it does come to be an issue.
As for there being a tutorial I am sure it won't be as difficult as some think. No doubt there will be a learning curve but I really don't think it will be too bad. The boundaries are almost limitless (so it seems) with the new software. I am greatly looking forward to it...
I think the new format looks great, and I like the compressed nature of it. Instead of foregrounding the posts, it gives all of us an opportunity to click on the area we want to read, and have fun from there. You guys have done a terrific job, and in the next four weeks we'll all have forgotten about the old server which crashed regularly, and was at times a huge frustration. Change can be unsettling, but in this case it's welcome.
So, get this puppy up and running, and let's all enjoy it.
I have posted images on baseballfever a number of times - and it is easier. I did not need to use a hosting site, people post very high res images, and they don't "go away". I hope the new net54 will be the same.
I just viewed the future Net54 website. The choice was made to adopt the Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. software plug-in type template that is used by forums I frequent; the Stormfront historical forum and the web coding forum. All these type template layouts are quite similar except for some minor additions of icons, images and links that account for the different powered vBulletin version numbers.
These forums are well established and have been online for years. One seeks operational donations and the other offers website links for job and web development opportunities. From my point of view I see nothing outstanding about these template layout websites versus the more individual characteristics and simplicity of the Net54 you are leaving.
I've seen all websites go down for short periods of time because the Internet still has its instabilities. I can not comment on image uploading. The sites I mentioned are primarily used for text messages.
Leon and Brian- Job well done! One of the most interesting things I saw was the names of posters on those archived posts from 2001 and 2002. I was doing a lot of head scratching and saying to myself, "oh yeah! Where is he now? What happened to him? Does he still collect or is he out of the hobby?" Guys who were frequent posters, from HaleyGator to Vorthian to Runscott, etc...
As you know....Halleygator "Hal" pretty much sold his collection after some personal family issues and doesn't collect anymore, as far as I know. Runscott visits from time to time and I emailed with him about a year ago...He is doing fine but not collecting too much; at least not cards. Vorthian and I email frequently and he is still in the hobby, working for an auction company. Yes, those old names are interesting....regards
edited to add that 2 of the 3 still read the board....I doubt Hal does anymore but I don't know for sure....

Thanks for the kind words. I was thrilled to have an opportunity to redesign our site and help give us an updated look. I think that once you all get used to things, you'll really have some fun with the "bells and whistles" this software has to offer. I'll run you through a few things briefly -
1. posting images to Net 54 was confusing to say the least AND, you couldn't even use the feature with Firefox! This new software will allow you to do it easily just by browsing for the file on your machine and then clicking "upload"
2. Keeps track of the number of the total # of posts each person has and displays that next to your user name.
3. Anybody can start a "poll" anytime they want. Very clean and efficient too! Over here, we basically had to create a seperate page for polls and place a link to it at the top of the page. When we ran out of room at the top, we had to stop doing polls essentially.
4. A new "reputation" system has been implemented. This allows you to giving somebody positive or negative "rep" just by clicking a button. You can also easily report offensive posts to Leon or myself.
5. of course, the "smilies" will be back and there will be more of them too. Personal avatars will be over here as well.
6. There will be a "quote" button in place allowing you to easily reference a point someone else just made as you start your own reply
7. Each member will get to have their own little bio page and will be able to private message others. Sort of like sending an instant message....
These are a few things. On the whole, it will be a lot of fun and the page will function better and be nicer to look at visually as well!
Nice job with everything, looks great. One question though, would it be time to update the member info page? I know I personally have some stuff I could correct as do a few others, and probably have some wanting to get added to the page at some point.
I know your probably wore out from this for the time being...just wanted to see if there were plans in the not too distant future to update the info on that page as well.
I can see my next comments taking this thread way off cue, so I apologize up front if that's what happens.
Leon, a couple of times you mention not registering one person in particular and then to Barry's post where he said he'd stick with the old forum, you said "It will be you and Jim C...."
I do hope that Jim is not the one who will be refused entry.
No-Leon is refering to that I am the most computer iliterate person on the board. I will likely never use of the new features of the board and all these things that Brian mentions--Firefoxes and bios and all the other things he brings up are not my thing.
I finally can use this system and I wish we would stay with this. Maybe Leon will leave this up so Barry and I can firefox or whatever that other techy word was on the other thread with each other.
I simply explained my observations and experience in using the new format and concluded that using either the old or new format as a forum will not make much difference in my opinion. Either way it will not affect me.
However your decision to convert my opinion into a personal attack is unwarranted. Just what you are warning others not to do.
My statement wasn't meant to be personal. I was only making a strong statement about my opinion towards the forum and the magnitude of improvement, going to the new forum software from the old forum software .
Since this is my thread let me go O/T for a second....
You mentioned, rather benignly-
"These forums are well established and have been online for years. One seeks operational donations and the other offers website links for job and web development opportunities."
Sounds pretty neat. Could you tell me more about the site you frequent that accepts operational donations, the "storm" one?
Congrats on the new soon-to-be site and welcome to the 21st Century. That layout is typical for most forums these days, and easy to navigate. Looking forward to it.
The transferring of the old data is taking much longer than anticipated. We are at about 10% of the main forum right now. It is going to be several more days, unfortunately, before we can move over. There have been some good suggestions so far. Once we get over there I am sure there will be many more and Brian, Dan and I will try to take those into consideration while making the new forum as hospitable as this one.. We don't feel we want to move over until the data transfer is done as it would be a technical nightmare with new threads getting in the way of the process......regards
Guys - take your time and do what you think you need to do. We've been here for many years and a few more day or weeks will not matter one bit. Thanks very much for all of the work this obviously takes, and definitely don't feel like you have to add to it by trying to rush everything.
Certainly, as is the case with the majority of the forums on the Internet there is a plea for donations to sustain their operating costs. I find very few forums without some type of financial requests. Out of the dozen or more forums I browse I found that the two I mentioned are using the same standard template software company that you chose to use. Most other forums use very similar type templates.
Here was a forum where apparently costs exceeded donations:
Jerry, are you going to just casually drop the fact that you frequent a neo-nazi hate site and just leave it at that? C'mon guy let us know what you're doing over there on Stormfront.
for those who don't know what Stormfront is check out their wikipedia entry
It wasn't really the donations that were in question, with my questioning. It was more the absolutely hate filled skinhead anti-semitic anti-everything, except WASP, site you frequent. That was kind of where I was going .....As Dan mentioned, do you care to explain that?

Maybe he's trying to get them interested in baseball cards so that they stop discussing ways to kill all the Jews. And all the blacks. And all the...(so on and so forth).
"Stormfront has published stories aimed at children, and the Stormfront for Kids section of the website hosts a link to "White Power Doom", a downloadable white power computer game that allows children the opportunity to hunt and kill Jews and black people."
I read and browse all sorts of historical and news sites. This is just one of them. My curiosity of that site does not mean I endorse any of their extreme philosophies. If you look at their membership list you will not find my name or any contributions of any kind by me.
We have spoken maybe 3-5 times in person....for maybe 20 minutes each time. I hoped I knew you better than someone that would endorse that type of behavour. I am aware there are sites like that but never really peruse them....maybe I should? For some reason I like to fill my life with as positive of vibes as possible...though I do agree that the old proverb says to know your friends well, and your enemies better, and that is not a bad thought either........regards
Stormfront is neither a "Historical" or "News" site. It is a HATE site pure and simple. It's purpose is to revise history and to indoctrinate people into their hate filled ways. To casually drop that site as one to compare website templates to the new Net54, and now put them in the category of History and News lends legitimacy to them. They are kooks.
Well, it is a historical and news site: for the history buff one can learn that the Holocaust never occurred; as for news: the blacks and Jews are destroying the world. It is a hilarious site, to be fair. I've never seen a site filled with more low-grade, frustrated white trash in my life.
I remember when Pete Townsend was cited for accessing a kiddie porn site with his credit card he claimed he was "doing research for his autobiography." Yeah, that's the ticket.

Well, from what I've heard Pete Townsend was molested as a child...which isn't saying there is useful information on a kiddie porn site but who am I to say.
And that white supremacy group has its headquarters in West Palm Beach, also rather odd as that is the part of Florida where Jews from the northeast go to retire.

Jerry wrote >> "If you look at their membership list you will not find my name or any contributions of any kind by me."
There's a registered user on stormfront with the username jsw600. Odds of a coincidence seem low. Though indeed the name Jerry Spillman is not actually found on the site.
I'm just a lowly lurker but Stormfront is so offensive that I'm ashamed it's even been brought up -- much less casually mentioned as a model of software -- on this fine forum.
I am sure the fact that Jerry Spillman's Network54.com login name is jsw600 and the fact you found a jsw600 registered on that hate site is merely coincidental. In order to lurk over there you have to participate....or er. it's just a site that takes donations.....something like that...
I dunno if this has been answered yet or not, but are we gonna be allowed to post signature images and if so is there gonna be a KB limit on our images (I know some forums haved a KB limit on sigs, other do not, within reason of course)?
The sections will be exactly like they are today from day one. I don't know about the signature lines yet but I would imagine 1-2 would be available, if that is an option. We'll have to get over there and see what pans out and what the masses want...but the sections will (most likely) stay the same....regards
I wasn't thinking "image" in sig line.....I agree, I doubt we want a million images all over the place....but generally speaking the inmates run this asylum so we shall see how it goes. I imagine there will be a learning curve of what we want and don't want...for a few months at least...
I think what Dan is thinking about is all those HUGE Image signature lines you see on other boards which take forever to download and weed through. I love images inside posts that add to the conversation but I Hate sig line images.. that's just unnecessary fluff if you ask me..

I like that idea about a separate O/T forum. That way the people that want to read that stuff can do it and those who don't won't have to worry about it cluttering up the main board.
I guess I should say I'm in favor of a seperate O/T section and thus my question.
I think it would be a great outlet for board members that like to discuss things other than vintage cards with the people that frequent the board, and at the same time leave the main board free of any discussions other than vintage cards.
Once we get over to the new board we can look at how it's structured again. Right now it looks like there is a database issue on the transferring of data so we are looking at a work around. Let us get in our new home and get settled in a bit and we can take a look at it again. regards
