Is anyone aware of any reprints of this set? I got one in and the card seems to stiff and just not aged right...

PLMK. Thanks

I am unaware of any e77 reprints, and I have never seen any.

As far as "feel," they are of the same stock as any baseball caramel. So if yours doesn't feel like a basic e90-1 or e92, then you might have reason for concern.

Post a scan, and I can give you my semi-educated opinion (own a complete set).

Scott,

The card just seems to thick and ridge to me. Then again I don't know if there are reprints of any boxing sets.

Let me know what you think.

James,

I also have doubts that is is real.

Although the printing and image are correct the stock looks funny (to go along with the fact that you say it feels funny).

There seems to be a bunch of "copies" on, what I call: "Cereal Box Cardboard" stock. Slightly heavier than basic vintage card stock, that also gives a slightly odd color (noticeable on Attell's image itself).

Example, W511 strips:

[linked image]

Top is real (tough type, thus condition), basic paper thin stock.
Bottom is fake (W511 come with different numbering, not reason for fake). While the image is good, it is on the cereal box stock, and an odd color (I bought it knowing it was fake for comparison).

So, imo, yours probably a copy. However, if you'd like, send it in to be graded. If it is real, for the $10 fee, you'll have a $100-150 card.

Yes, James and I know there is a boxing section to net54, we also know it is rarely used. Another reason I think the new board will be better, with more threads available on opening page.

Oh, and ego time ..... e77 a great set:

Not what I wanted

To hear, damn Scott, anything else I can look for, whould a black light show me anything? It certainly feels like a cerel box type, I just had never heard about any fakes before.

Also this was a new ebayer so I took a shot. Good thing those paypal people protect us buyers no matter what....

James - I was bidding on that card too. If I remember correctly, the scan was very blurry. I didn't know of any reprints either so I was gambling that it was legit.

I hope all turns out well for you.

unfortunate sign

April 1 2009, 2:01 PM

The toning on the front borders is the same toning that is within the front front borders. That is usually a sign of a fake on any cards I can think of....

I see what you are saying but this card definatly has soem foxing/dirt staining on the front. That may be what you are seeing. It needs to get off to SGC regardless but the question is how long does paypal give me before I can't get a refund.... I don't know if I ever had to deal with something like this before happy.gif

I see that it could have consistent foxing all across the front. I am just saying I have handled a ton of bad cards with that kind of "even" toning. It could still be good but ...
Someone can double check me on this but I think you have 60 days from the date of purchase, to file with Paypal. I am not positive of that so do double check. Good luck with it and let us know how it goes...

Agreed, send it into SGC. If it's good, you're good; if it's bad, then you have documentation to give to paypal.

Oh, and finally remembered, the only "official reprinted" boxing series, that I can think of, is the T220.

Good luck.

From someone who has been bent over by paypal, you may be out of luck. Unless something has changed, if there is proof of delivery, regardless of what was in the package, paypal will back the seller.

It graded fine

April 21 2009, 11:44 AM

If anyone cares this was graded a SGC 40 without any questions.

I am happy at least.

I too am glad I was wrong. I guess under inspection the "even" staining was really vintage staining. Thanks for following up. It helps for future reference....best regards

Did you illuminate it with black light?

Just because it is graded doesn't mean it's authentic... were you wanting to know that it was authentic, or you just wanted it graded?

Just for fun, hit it with uv light... if someone has fabricated that there's a fair likelihood that it will fluoresce along the edge, even through the slab.

Interesting thread

April 22 2009, 1:09 PM

FWIW, it doesn't seem to me that I have ever heard of a counterfeit on this set. It is not worthwhile given the relatively modest prices that could be realized. The card looks soiled to me, nothing more.
