The race for the baseball playoffs is heating up. Atlanta maintains a slim lead, but the rest of the pack is close behind and many teams look ready to make a move.
A lot of baseball fans I know have some kind of tradition for Opening Day, from attending the game to watching it on TV to toasting first pitch of a favorite team to playing a game of catch no matter what the weather.
Mine is raising my Tigers flag up the flagpole on Opening Morning and taking it down on the last day the Tigers play each season. Al C posted a really cool writing that he says he does every Opening Day. (I won't steal his thunder, but it is way cool.)
I have gone to every opening day at Shea Stadium Since 1980 and have all the tickets stubs. I remember Tom Seaver,s return in 1983, Gary Carter,s 10th inning home run in 20 degree weather in 1985, a game that went 13 innings and was won 1-0 in 80 degrees in 1998. Opening day is like a holiday for me. This year My wife,3 children and other friends will be at Citifield next monday night. I hope to have many more memories at the new ballpark.CN
I have attended the Phillies Opening Day every year since 1983, and was there last evening to cheer on the World Series Champions. The crowd was festive, the team entered the stadium through a ramp in left center, parachutists delivered the first ball, and everything was in place for a real celebration until Brett Myers threw a 2-1 change-up to Brian McCann that made it 2-0, and the Braves never looked back.
Unfortunately, in Philadelphia the tradition that has become most entrenched with Opening Day is losing--the overwhelming majority of games since I began attending are losses. But, since they lost Opening Day games the last two years, and were in the playoffs/won the WS in each, I guess I can be content with another loss.
I hope the rest of you enjoy the day--despite the outcome last evening, life has returned with the beginning of the 2009 season.
If I don't get the chance to go watch Reds opening day in person I usually catch the game at Hooters. It's almost always packed on opening day with Reds fans there for the game!
Opening day--4 of my friends and I each pick a player and we guess batting avg, hrs and rbi for season--whoever comes closest on each players stat wins a point--15 points in all.
Its Monday morning here at my tax office. A good old ball game on the radio while I plug away at the numbers. Something about a ball game on the radio - nice.
Ever since my oldest daughter was in grade school (the mid-90's) I would pick her up at lunch and we would go to the Rockies game together. I taught her how to keep score, we would eat hotdogs and sit in the sun. She is a senior in college this spring and we still try to meet every year, only missing 2008 when she was on Semester-at-Sea. The home opener is this Friday - I can't wait!
Always wear my lucky Red Sox t-shirt under my corporate dress clothing on opening day. Of course the schuedule makers decided it was better for the Sox to open up in Boston against the TAMPA BAY Rays so we'll have to wait until tomorrow due to the 40 degree temps and pouring rain! A real genius it was who decided the Florida team would travel to Massachusettes in April!
Exactly and thats what makes it so challenging--who knows with Dukes. He has the capability of .280/30/100 but might end up in jail or the minors--my friends try to pick players they think they have some inside knowledge on. I picked dukes--my brother in law who lives in the Atlanta area thinks Infante is very underrated and will hit/field his way into the lineup--or he may just continue to be a utility player.
Every year since college (1997) a bunch of my fraternity brothers met up prior to the Mariners opening day at a bar called Pyramid which is just across the street from Safeco. We get their when the doors open (around 10:00 am) and watch the early games while drinking right up until 15 minutes prior to first pitch. For the most part we have been able to have the same crew at every game, last year I almost missed it because my son came home from the hospital that day but me wife gave me the Get Out Of Jail Card so that I could continue the tradition. I took my wife one year but as luck would have it that day she got laid off from her job so after 5 innings of her fighting back the tears we left earlyshe has not been invited back since.
I watch the Mets win, just like I did today. They have the best Opening Day record in baseball history.

We made a promise. We swore we'd always remember.

My oldest daughter was born on opening day. I still remember catching a peek at the scores from the waiting room. I also remember watching most of the NCAA Championship game from the nursery. So my opening day tradition is usually centered around a birthday party.
