Soaking a Card

Okay, I wanted to try to soak a card and I did. I just removed it from between two 12" granite floor tiles, and I'm quite pleased with the results. The card, one of my T205 Pirates, did not have any creases. Instead, I was targeting 100 years of grime. I had no intention to change the grade, just clean it up.

I have a couple of questions for board collectors:
1. I know there are differing opinions on the practice, but how widespread is the practice of soaking?
2. Currently, I do not plan to send the card for grading. If I do, what are the chances of the card coming back as Authentic or Altered?

Thanks, John
