Are Scooters like Kymco or SYM in the 250-500cc range allowed to run in the 1000mi rides? I've only seen motorcycle running. Thanks.

If it's street legal it's all good.

There have been several 50cc bikes on which certified rides were done (1000/24, 1500/36). No reason why not a scooter.

I believe our own Steve Stellar successfully completed the Iron Butt Rally in '05 on a scooter.

I too remember Etlicher dressed as a clown. That was the first thing I remember seeing at my first MN1K, and thinking "what the hell are these people all about anyway?"

I believe Mr. Kocur has ridden a scooter in several of the MN1K events. I distinctly remember seeing him about a minute after picking my bike up in a sand pit in Carlos Avery in 2007.

No, just the P200 in 2007. The Ninja 250 was run in 2008-9 and is technically a motorcycle.
As for Carlos Avery, there is definitely some puckering involved when running 10" tires on that type of "terrain". But at least I didn't drop mine. Just sayin'...
