Tomorrow marks the 65th running of the I-Cycle Derby, the annual NYD motorcycle ride.
Yeah, you read that right: in Bloomington, Minnesota.
On New Year's Day.
I am presenting the trophy tomorrow.
It is a traveling trophy, like the Stanley Cup, or, for you NCAA football fans, the Little Brown Jug
First run in 1949, the event was hosted by the now-defunct Gopher State M/C Club. They handed the event to the Traveler's Club in the mid-60s, who have faithfully hosted it since.
Tomorrow starts a new era as the Traveler's hands it over to TeamStrange.
As I look at the recorded names going back to 1965, there are some interesting bits:
Many riders have won the event twice
Don Framsted has won it three times, as has TS founder, the late Eddie James.
Victor Wanchena (TS rider, MN M/C Monthly publisher) has won it four times
as has yours truly (TS Rider #7, MMM® contributor)
The big bad daddy of them all is Don Youngdahl, who has won it five times! (81, 85, 86, 88, 89)
In addition to Eddie, Victor and myself, other TS riders have won. Look for Ivar Natins, Patrick Jacobson, Mark Foster (TS Rider #1), Kevin Kocur and Brian Waletzko on the trophy.
I aplogise if I have omitted anyone.
Unfortunately, there are no records for the Gopher State Club years. There is no known club history; nothing at the AMA
We hope that some records surface. Any former Gopher Club guys still around?
Most interesting to me is three-time winner Kent Van Meter who won it in 1970 and 1972; then again in 1993
That is a 24-year span!
