Info on my Dad Buford Wright
by
(no login)
My dad, Buford Wright, worked at the Worley coal mines in Kentucky, possibly in the 1930's or 40's. He was born at Indian Head, Ky in 1913. I have a photo of him driving a "motor" as he called it, which was the vehicle they used to transport the coal out of the mine. My dad was diagnosed with Black Lung in the mid 60's. He was sick for many years, and finally died of TB in 1971 when I was age 16. We lived in Oneida, TN, and he died in Knoxville at what was then called the East Tennessee Tuberculosis Sanitorium, later called the East Tennessee Chest Disease Hospital. For the past year or so I have been trying to gather information to submit to the U.S. Department of Labor regarding a benefits claim, but I keep hitting a wall. I need to know if anyone has information about the coal mines back then, or about my dad, or someone who may know something about him. I will sure appreciate anyone's help.
My grandfather worked in mine #4 in worley for 32 years. My uncle mine #3 for about 3 weeks before he quit to get a safer job in the army!
You could get info from the stearns coal and lumber museum. its the old office turned museum. po box 452 stearns, ky 42647 606-376-5730. hope it helps.
Looking for info. on William H. Deits ( Diets ) and family. I have him on 1900 census with wife Sarah and 6 children. Are their any Deits family members still living in this area? Thanks alot
Art Diets
Walter L. Neely in Kentucky? One of my great uncles were born somewhere in Kentucky. Unfortunately all siblings are gone now. Walter owned a saw mill in W.Va. until 1929 when he lost all in the crash. So it would have been much earlier.
THis would be my Great Great Great James Richmond. For the past 3 months I have been trying to trace down my Fathers family and have been pretty lucky to have found what i have found on them. If anybody has the origianl copy of this census i would like to see it ro have a copy of it also. If anybody has any other information about the Richmonds it would be greatly appreciated.
The Berry, Shelton, and Raines families are my connection to Whitley Co., and any information would be greatly appreciated. I am especially looking for info. on my great grandfather, Thomas Robert (Boyd) Berry. Boyd Berry was born about 1882, but records may have him listed as born about 1877 or so. He volunteered for the Spanish American War at age 15, and stated his birth year to be about 1877. He may have continued with the false birth year since he drew a veteran's pension the rest of his life. Boyd Berry had a brother named Hugh Berry, and they were mostly raised in their grandparent's home (mother's parents). Boyd married Mary Pauline (Polly or Poley) Shelton of Siler? in Whitley Co. They had 9 children while living in Whitley Co., and one son, Howard Berry b. 1909, married Anna Mae Rains of Williamsburg. Boyd Berry moved his family & 3 grandchildren to Jackson Co., KY about 1933.
My great grandfather was E. T. White and his wife was Margaret Walker from page 177A of the 1880 Census. Thank you for the information concerning him. If you know of his father's name and mother I would appreciate it. E. T. White and his wife are buried in Canadatown Cemetery.
Betty,
I have been researching this family as well. Thomps White and Margaret are also my great great grandparents.
My line is through their son George.
I have been told that the parents of Thompse are JOhn White 1830 1896 and Sarah Worley 1832 1899. They are buried at the Rebird Cemetery in Whitley. John's father was Nicholas White.
I have apicture if you are interested , I will be glad to email if you are interested.
Email me. Maybe we can share.

I guess you know how many children E.T. White and Margaret Walker had. They had 9 children. John White which I haven't gotten any information about. He is the oldest and moved to Tenn. George, Jess, Bill, Sam, Mark( I believe he died young) James Everette(my grandfather) Maude Rachel White Pennington , and Ed.If your line is through George White you are related to Elva Jeanette White. I know George had all girls. Bertha, Mary, Margarette, Maude, Elva Jeanette, Edna, and Effie. Which girl is your lineage from. I talked with Elva Jeanette a few years before she died. So I was able to get some information from her. I would love to have any picture or information you have of the family.
While trying to find information on my ancestors, I found your messge about being related to John White and Sarah Worley. My mother was a White and her line came through John's brother, Holden W. and Anna Worley. Looks like several of the Worley's and the White's married each other. Even Melvina White, their sister, married Elijah Worley "Lege". My mother was born in Whitley Co but moved to Harlan and lived there until she died in 1994. Her father was Alfred Franklin White and his father was Jasper Newton White. Do you have any info going back farther than John White, Sr. who was Nicholas White's father?
this is the info I have......

If you look up the Whalen family in McCreary county Kentucky you may find a contact that will give you the location of this cemetary, our relatives are barried there. Dorothy Neal/Whalen was barried there around 1988 0r 1989, she was my grandmother. She has a brother named Dexter Neal to whom still lives in McCreary County. There is a family a Bryant's living up in Marshes Siding, Dalmer Bryant whom married Betty Hatfield, She passed, but he is still living and one of there daughters Valerie lives down the road from uncle Dexter.
Hi You must be Duck's child. I'm Wanda. Dester was my uncle too. My dad Gart was Dester's half brother. Your grandma Dorothy is my aunt (Dad's sister.) Your uncle Bleach wanted me to look up Corbet and his mother. I found them in the 1930 census (maybe 1920)in Stearns or Smithtown. It was within the township. We could throw a stick and hit their house. Corbet is buried in Holloway Graveyard as is my grandpa and my dad. When Dorothy died she requested to be buried beside Corbet.

I am seeking information about James Gilbert Williams b. 4 Apr 1853 in Whitley County and Mary Ann Lovett b. 23 Jun 1850 in Whitley County. They were married 20 Aug 1873 in Williamsburg. Mary Ann's parents were John Lovett and Sarah Pennington.
Thanks
Allan
Sonja,
Just wondering ?? does your copy of the census tell us any more info. If I give you a page number can you tell if it has place born or parent's place.
I am interested in page 162B John Durham.
Thanks for the trouble..You have been a great help.
Hey, Wanda, how are things? "Bright's Disease is a historical classification of kidney diseases
that would be described in modern medicine as acute or chronic nephritis." "Flux - An excessive flow or discharge of fluid like hemorrhage or diarrhea." there is a great site for these antiquated names for disease at http://www.monmouth.com/~sorourke/disease.htm
I know that I'm somehow connected to the Whitley County area, genealogically speaking. I would love to visit the area and find names that I've only read and written doing my family history. My grandfather, William Henry Neal, was born in the Marsh Creek area. He married Amelia Worley in Winfield, TN, which I understand is not far from the Pine Knot vicinity. Amelia Worley Neal was the daughter of Willis Worley and Jemima Shepherd. My great grandfather was John O. Neal and his wife was Nancy Ryan of the area. John O. Neal's daddy was Daniel Neal or he may have spelled it Neil--I'm not sure. Anyone reading this have any connection to the above names please e-mail me at Bogry@EverestKC.net OK?
Thank you Willis Neal--Kansas City area.
Hi there, We are related, i just don't know how close. I'm Wanda Worley Jordan from McCreary Co. KY 1949. My dad was Gart Worley b. Ritner, KY Wayne Co. 1907. His dad, my gpa, was Elisha Worley, Ritner, KY 1879. My grandpa (which was Isaac Worley's grandson) married Dovie Jane Clark (which was Isaac Worley's granddaughter.) Elisha's parents were Christopher Columbus (Bud) Worley 1855 Wayne Co. KY and Dovie's parents were Jemima Worley and James Clark. I have pictures of J.W. and Jemima Clark's gravestone at Holloway Cemetary in Whitley City. To help untangle, let me go straight from the horse's mouth:
Wiley Worley 1775 N.C. (Son of John worley and brother to Silas, et al.)
Isaac Worley, 1804 N.C.
Andrew Jackson (A.J. Worley) b. 1933 Wayne Co. KY, killed in action 1862, buried in Freedom or New Liberty in Wayne Co. in the Jones Cemetary.
Christopher Columbus (Bud) Worley, 1855 Ritner, Wayne Co. married Martha A. Bryant 1850 WayneCo.
These two are my G-grandparents. They had two kids found in the 1880 census of Big Sinking 6th precinct, Wayne Co. Florence 1878 and my gpa, Elisha Worley 1879.
Elisha married his second cousin Dovie Clark and borne my dad Gart in Ritner 1907.
Elisha and Dovie divorced and she married Osby Neal. They borne my dad's half siblings, Dorothy, 1915 McCreary Co. Dester Neal, 1921, and Chester, 1925. He died of unknown illness Ap. 7, 1936. Dester married Lula Sellers and borne Willene Neal. Dorthy married Corbet Whalen and had five boys before he died in the coal mines. We have a lot to talk about. Wanda Worley Jordan
Hi, Wanda Worley Jordan,
It's so nice to get a response from you and to know that you live in the area of my interests of genealogy. We do go back to the Wiley Worley/Dorcas Meadors line Our connective relatives are sons of the two mentioned, Wiley and Dorcas. Her name wouldn't be a considered choice by todays young parents. LOL
My e=mail is Bogry@EverestKC.net and I would like to exchange information that both of us have on the Worleys. A lot of my genealogy is based on a consenus of information that I look up on the computer.
I remember fondly my grandmother Amelia Worley Neal. She was a petite lady, chewed tobacco and at one time, I believe, she smoked a corncob pipe. A beautiful lady!!
I do show in my records Cader (my connective) and Isaac (your connective) as brothers. The dates for Isaac are the same but your imput on his death during the Civil War is important information. My information show that Isaac was married three times and I'm not sure of this info being correct. What do you show?
Let's visit more in the future, Wanda. I have many question about Kentucky, home of the Neals, Worleys, and Ryans, my ancestors. Use my e-mail address if it would be more convenient, Wanda. OK?
Hi there, I'm not sure I got this email. (or I would have replied.)
My line is Wiley and Dorcas Worley 1775 N.C./VA;
their son, Isaac Worley 1804, Wayne Co.KY; He married Elizabeth Davis and begot my gg gpa Andrew Jackson Worley, 1833 Wayne Co. KY
A.J. married Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) Jones from Jones Holler in Wayne Co. KY. They begot my G gpa Christopher Columbus (Bud) Worley) 1855 Wayne Co. KY. Bud married Martha ann Bryant 1876. Their second child is my grandpa Elisha Worley 1878. Dad is Gart Worley 1907 Wayne Co. KY.
My Neal connection is: Grandpa Elisha married Dovie Clark a short time before divorcing > 1907. Dovie then married Osby Neal and had my dad's half siblings: Dorothy Neal 1917, Dester Neal 1921, and Chester Neal 1925, all in McCreary Co. Ky. Let's chat.
Wanda Worley Jordan
Hi, My husbands grandmother was a Worley. Her name was Rachel Worley, daughter of John Willis Worley and Nannie Morrow from the Wayne County area or Jones Hollow area in McCreary County. She was married to Gilson Pearson (Dick) Jones. Rachel is buried in the Rock Springs Cemetary in Jones Hollow and G.P. Jones was buried in the Baxter Davis cemetary at Cowhorn Ky. Can you tell me if this is in your family lines? Thank you,
HI
Yes, Your Worley is a sister(aunt?) to my ancestor, Isaac. I have walked all over Cowhorn in Ritner looking for any relatives. I found a lot in Jones Cemetary and Baxter Davis. Theres also another one in Ritner- Foster something Cemetary. Foster-Clark Cemetary, maybe. Someone down there should know. Keep in touch.
Wanda
HI Vivian,
Yes, these ancestors are my line. The Davis line comes from Baxter Davis's son George and Sally Davis. They had a bunch of boys. Ephram and Raymond were brothers. My aunt Allie Phillips married Raymond Davis and they had my cousins Raymond ottis Davis, Arnold Davis, and Doyle Davis. These cousins still live on Sand Hill in MCcreary Co. Ky.
A lot of my lines are buried in the Jones Cemetary and the Clark-Foster Cemetary in Cow Horn.
I have a lot on the Joneses. The Joneses married into the Worley family--or vice versa.

I meant Jim's daughter not Bleach's daughter. You are Jim and Joyce's daughter. When we lived ther they were living in your grandma Dorothy's home place. Joyce has worked at Rite Aid for 15? 20? years. I said goodbye to her just before we moved back home. I think you were at the family reunion at the 4H campground on year. Anyway, Jim is my cousin. He is my OLDER cousin and you tell him I said that. Wanda

HI Again,
I need to clarify Isaac's Civil War. It was not Isaac but Isaac's sons Andrew Jackson Worley 1833 and Andrew's brother Matthew F. They died within a few years of each other. Matthew died in a POW prison/camp in Anderson S.C. and Andrew died 1864 in Vicksburg, MS. Andrew's military stone readys A.J.Worley then gives numbers. I have a picture of it. I don't know about Matthew's burial place.
Do you know how many kids Wiley and Dorcas had, and if so can you name them?
Wanda
You wrote that Andrew Jackson (A.J. Worley) b. 1933 Wayne Co. KY, killed in action 1862, buried in Freedom or New Liberty in Wayne Co. in the Jones Cemetery..
I think you intended to say that he was born in 1833. I have been to the Foster-Clark Cem. in Freedom area of Wayne County, KY. I believe the A.J. Worley buried there is the same one you are referring to in your message.
I am one of many in the Foster family. I just wanted to let you know about the grave site of A.J. Worley and also let you know I enjoyed reading your message. Thank you for sharing your information
HI Marsha, Thank you for the correction. Yes, I meant 1833-not 1933. Yes, I was at the Foster Clark Cemetary and got pics of A.J.'s military stone. If you should need Worley information or can add to this line, let's chat.

Hi there second cousin, I'm thrilled to get email from cousins I haven't met yet. I knew your mom and dad before they were married. Bobby Dean was an infant. They had their second one (Donnie?) before they moved to Mi. Then they had three more kids that I haven't seen. One was named after my aunt Dorothy. And I can't remember the baby's name.
Are you into genealogy? I can give you tons of oldie-moldy stuff.

Hello Willis, I just came across this site and wanted to let others of the Neal Family know that I have the Daniel and Rachel Neal genealogy which is close to 400 pages by now. I have a copy of the deed where Daniel and Rachel sold land in Virginia before coming to Whitley Co., KY but still have not proven who his parents were. If you are a Neal descendant, please contact me at citygirlgg@yahoo.com to exchange information. Ginni
Hi, I think that my greatgrandfather [George Neal,3rd, was a brother to
yours. I'm new at this and really like to find out about George Neal and his decendents. my mother is Pheobe May Neal.
I need the census posting for Hiram Johnson or Witt in 1900. His birth father was Johnson but his step grandfather was Witt and some of Witts grandchildren reverted to this name. Hiram was born ca 1865 and m. 1886 in Whitley Co. to A.J. Sullivan. I believe he lived in Whitley co. in 1900.
I have James Frank Lawson listed as the son of James "Red Jim" Lawson and Elizabeth "Pheobe" Croley. Red Jim - born 1800 Clear Fork, Whitley County, KY.
died June 1869 Boston Precient, Whitley Co., KY.
Buried Cane Creek Cemetery, Whitley Co., KY.
Pheobe - born 1802 Campbell Co., TN
died 1870 Boston Precient, Whitley Co., KY.
Red Jim & Pheobe were my husbands ancestors.
They had 13 children with James Frank being one of them. Mary
My father James Hardy Whitley was born in
Whitley County, Ky in 1898. His fathers
name was either James Harvey Whitley or
maybe Hardy Whitley. The Whitleys moved to
Texas altho I can't tell you when. Probably
in the very early 1900's. I have reason to
believe that my grandfather was part of the
Whitley clan that the county was named for.
If any one has further information on this
please e-mail me.
Thanks
