OT - Buying a High Mileage Car

Hi.

Looking for a new car at the moment for work. I'm after a car 3/4 years old. Until now I've been looking for something ideally with 40-60k on the clock, possibly up to 80k.

However, I have recently seen some really good deals on high mileage cars such as a 55 plate Honda Accord 2.2 i-CDTi with 120k on the clock, full Honda service history (12 stamps with last service just done) that looks mint (leather, 17s, etc) and has probably spent most of it's life plodding up and down motorways. The car is £4500 compared to similar age examples with 60k on the clock which are £7k+.

I will have the car 2 or 3 years and will do approx 12k a year. Would a high mileage car, like the Honda mentioned above be more hassle than it's worth? Would I be facing some big bills?

Also, again using the Honda as an example, should I be put off by the fact that even though the car is cheap now by the the time I'm finished with it (and it has 150k on the clock) it will be worth bugger all anmd will be unsellable?

Any advice on this topic would be appreciated.

Cheers guys.

well it all depends how long you want to keep it & if your buying a car just on it's resale value.

I do alot of miles a year, so if I buy a low millage car by the time I come to sell it, it'll be a high millage car for the year...... thus worth less.

If I buy a high millage car, by the time I sell it, it'll still be a high millage car!

There does become a point tho where the millage is so high, it's not worth the risk for a buyer.

The only thing you can ask yourself is, do you want this type of car for this money, or go for a previous model/ lower spec for same money but less millage.

Good luck!!

im sure it will be fine mate, cars last alot longer now, 120k on a 55 plate is more equlivant to 60k on a 95 car for example.

hondas/bmw get to 250k+ miles without any real hastle.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Yeah, I was thinking that as long as the service history is tip top then any good modern car should be able to do big mileage.

I have a 06 BMW 318d with 108k miles - It does not worry me one iota that it has over 100k. It just passed it first MOT last Thursday with not one single advisory, due to the fact that it's been plodding up and down the motorway all of it's life at 70-80mph between 1800-2100rpm. happy.gif

Just another point on higher mileage cars.

If I get a diesel i'd like to perhaps have a remap done. Are there any complications associated with doing this to a higher mileage?

Well I had my bravo remapped from 100-150bhp.... at 48,000miles.

after it got to 70,000 miles I got Angel Tuning to lower it to 130bhp..

I sold it with 100,000iles on the original clutch.... and I didn't drive it slowly & it wasn't shy of a few 0-60 tests!!!

The chap who bought it from me changed the clutch and it's still going strong with prob about 120-130k miles.

Other people have remapped their cars at 50,000 miles and had a new cluch very soon after...... it's all down to how you drive your car, to how many miles it will do trouble free..... oh and service, service, service it!!! Oil and filter change every 6,000 miles (4-5months) is what the bravo got!!
