New CD player fitted ...

It works fine, except that it loses all stored radio stations if I switch the ignition off and remove the security panel. Also, the CD player won't activate if the ignition is in the off position. Anybody come across this problem?

YES!!!

Swop the yellow and red wires round.

They should have bullet connectors along the wires, so just pull them apart and swop them round.

No need to cut or force any of the pins out the connector block happy.gif

Give that a go & everything will be fine happy.gif happy.gif

I just removed the unit to check and there's only two leads in use - one for the antennae, and a connector pin which has a half-dozen wires connected to it including a red one and a yellow one. Along the length of both the red and yellow ones are an exposed section of each wire held by a metal clip and surrounded by clear plastic, but I don't see an obvious way of changing them around.

the metal clip inside the clear plastic are bullet connectors, you pull them apart normally and then switch them around

"....surrouded by clear plastic"
Could they be bullet or spade connectors?
They can be plastic covered. They just pull apart.

Yes - they look like the clips at the bottom - but silver. I was naturally a bit wary but I can just give them a good old tug apart? Then Push them back together?

yep yep,

obviously try not to rip the wires out tho.

they are made to be pulled apart so you can change the positive and constant live around

Update for you.

I did as suggested, so now we go RED - YELLOW YELLOW - RED. One problem is solved - The player now remembers radio stations correctly. Before I convince myself it still has a problem, are you supposed to be able to switch on the CD player when the ignition is off and the key out? That still doesn't happen.

I have never been able to get past this one, there is a way but I think you have to cut some wires to have a permanent connects.

Unfortunately I think this also mean that your battery gets drained overnight.

Sometimes there is a setting in the cd players menu to allow non ignition power but if not i think that's it.

Fair enough. I think half the battle in maintenance is to know when to quit. wink.gif

as darren said there is ways

my sony stereo works with the ignition of and my steering wheel control work to on my electrical connector wires where the red and yellow wires are mine has a double bullet connector on it so i can connect both the yellow and red wire to just the permanent feed and dont have to use the ignition feed for any

and the question to it draining the battery is it doesn't at all i have had my stereo in my car for nearly a year now and have had no problems with the battery

only problems i have had is i sometimes forget to turn it off and end up leaving it playing to itself overnight and then when i open the door in the morning the radio is still playing i then think it wont start but so far its started all the time(touch wood)

cheers

You can make it work with no key in the ignition.

Right then here is how you do it....

The RED wire is the Ignition wire and the YELLOW is the permanent.

you therefor have to join the red and yellow wire that come out of the radio to JUST the YELLOW wire.

NOW.... the YELLOW wire and RED wire have swap places on the fiat so.....

the RED wire from the car that now joins the yellow wire, you need to add the red wire to it also..... making the YELLOW wire from the car going to nothing.

FINALLY.... Dont worry, they are both live wires so your not going to blow urself up, just don't join the red and yellow together at the car end or your car will be permanently turned on!!! oww errr wink.gif

Well mate, I followed your instructions exactly, re-installed the player, and now it briefly turns on, and then immediately off. I reversed the changes, and it won't even turn on.

Looks like it's well and truly knackered. Should have quit while I was ahead. Great.

Update : I was sitting having a cup of tea, pondering how to sort out what had happened when I happened to look out the window and see one of my car doors was unlocked. I went out and saw that one of the locks wasn't shutting along with the rest of the central locking.

Whipping out the fusebox diagram I tracked down a popped fuse. Quick trip to Halfords and a bit of twiddling and the central locking and CD Player are back.

Weirdly, power to the hi-fi is also to the front left central locking.
