Greetings from Spain. The identification number on the floor of my friends punto cabrio has been damaged from rust, this is a common issue as water ingress through a soft top over years.
When he took it for a test (a bit like MOT ) it failed, he spent a long and wire brushed it clean, this time he said,it will pass, but borderline and probarbly would not pass next years.
The opinion here in Spain is nothing can be done, the car is now finished.
So far i wrote to Fiat 3 times, months pass, no reply
The experts here are few, so I thought an English forum would be best to consult for an idea how we can save this great car.
Kindest Regards

What we do here in my country, is get the car to a police station that deals with stolen or impounded cars. They do a reserialization of stolen cars and are able to make a new number stamp on the chassis, so with all papers of ownership, they can make you a new clone stamp with a police one next to it so it is 100% legal.

Ask around by the police or MOT station, they should know about it, if not try a restaurateur specialist, they should know stuff like that.
