What a sh*t end to a good day...

Got out of my prince2 course and went to start the car...nothing but a half hearted chug.

Got the RAC over, turns out that it is the starter motor (he thought it was head gasket at first). I could have coped with that, i figure that's not gonna be more that £150??

So we bump started the car and that was all good, i drove to my local garage to abandon the car there overnight and about a mile away from there i noticed a crunchy noise coming from my clutch.
Now when I depress the pedal and lift it up again there is a sorta raspy scrapy crunchy noise.

Am i right in thinking that the clutch has naffed itself while bump starting? Am i also right in thinking it'd be around £150 to replace it?

it all depends on how long it will take to change the clutch, 3 to 4 hours and how much they will supply it for,
i cant see the cluch goin just cos u had to bump start it once, it must have been on its way out,

you never know it could be the clutch slave cylinder ( bout a £10er from scrappers )fingers crossed eh

Hardly the clutch went with jump starting, it was on its way if its the clutch at all. Check your slave cylinder under the battery tray, brake fluid.
The sound, is it coming from in side the car or under the bonnet.

The sound seems to be coming from under the bonnet. How do I tell if the clutch slave is gone by looking at it?

Yep, just use a flashlight and look under the battery tray for leaks of oil. Plus check the brake oil level.

Ok just got out to the car and the brake fluid level is at max.
No sign of oil under the battery tray.
When pressing the clutch pedal the noise definatly comes from under the bonnet, the pedal seems to resist down to roughly where the bite point is and then clunks and is easier to press.

Any further advice?

Clutch plate then , nothing else it can be I don't think.

Like anon said, clutch. By the description the clutch bearing and spring are shot.

why would it be the clutch ???

if the starter motor is shagged, has it not crossed your mind that the 'workings' of a starter motor runs via the bendix (solonoid) and this is halfway engaging itself, thus giving the scraping noise you hear. I have had on some autoboxes the starter go, and same grindy scrapey noise was present. google about how a starter motor works and you'll see.

poor you to believe the clutch has failed. you would have noticed that miles before now!!

First of all Ed didnt mention has he or not repaired the starter motor !
Second it aint stated what happened to the starter motor, is the motor turning, but the bendix is stuck or not.
Third the sound comes when he presses the clutch and the bendix is either stuck in the flywheel or not, better to say can be half in also - that wold be noticeable when the engine is running and his aint.
For the grinding noise of the bendix you need an running engine or ad least the starter motor.
The clutch aint connected to the starter motor.

But if you anon have a clue that I dont see, please share, any advice is welcome here.

Right, I have limited technical knowledge which is part of the reason I am posting here to ask about the situation.

the starter motor is not yet fixed, it doesn't turn over sounds (to my untrained ear) like it strains then gives up, strains then gives up...
Engine will start when bumped, noise is only on attempted gear change, I only noticed it when at low speed e.g. Gears 1 + 2.
The noise I described in a previous post happens when engine off and pressing clutch pedal.

Bendix is a small spring loaded teeth wheel that makes it possible to turn the engine at startup.
The sound that it makes if its malfunctioning are the same as if you hold the key too long in the position for starting the engine while the engine is running - if you get me. Other malfunction can be that its not moving, you would hear the starter motor spin, but engine wouldn't.

IMO, get the starter motor fixed first - start the engine and check how the gear changes feel.
If all is OK, drive home and find any other garage that gives you the better quote.

Starter motor fixed, thrust bearing is playing up which accounts for the clutch noise.

how much should the fitting of a clutch kit cost, any ideas?

Oh and I know this is childish but since there is a problem with the clutch; @anon f**k you and the condecending attitude you rode in on.

I would say at a decent garage you will be looking supply and fitting about £200 ish.

I may be wrong but my g/f's 1.2 corsa was £200 and my 2.4jtd with cambelt change and clutch was £500 all in.

Like the anon said, bad advice is costly

Back to the point, first do not just change the thrust bearing, it is less money, but if you ever take the gearbox down related to the clutch, its best to change all (set).
Reason - the bearing is new, but all other parts are old, so they will also follow soon.
The set consists of one thrust bearing, friction plate and clutch pressure plate.
For a 1,2 I think the set will go for around 120 and around 200 quid for parts and work.

Thanks though the set seems a lot cheaper on www.buypartsby.co.uk : £39.15 + vat

Basically I decided to chuck the £120 for changing the starter in the hope that the thrust bearing problem would be something i could cope with for a month before changing.
Having driven it now there's no way i'm driving it anywhere else. It seems to get stuck in low gears (which causes an unsaveable stall as pressing the clutch makes no difference).

Having looked at the value of my bravo on parkers (currently £320 for poor condition - £500 for good condition) my car (with the clutch fixed) would still count as in poor condition. So i'm seriously considering cutting my losses and getting a new car.
