Running in the Cold

October 14 2003 at 4:45 AM

Fellow Runners:

Now that the warm days of summer are all but forgotten and a colder than normal winter is predicted to be upon us, I am pondering what to wear during the cold months. What do you guys wear to run when it starts getting chilly / freezing? Also, what do you wear on chilly trail runs.

Cheers,
Abram

gear for different weather

80+ degrees: shorts & thin, fast-drying socks

Between 50 and 79 degrees: shorts, short sleeve shirt or singlet (maybe a light microfiber jacket with a hood for colder windy/rainy days)

Between 40 and 49 degrees: shorts or pants, fast-drying short sleeve shirt or singlet, gloves, and a long sleeve shirt/jacket/trash bag for warming up in the first 5-10 minutes (or for rain), maybe also a cap/earband

Between 30 and 39 degrees: light pants/good tights, fast-drying short sleeve shirt or slinglet, good fast-drying gloves, and a good fast-drying long-sleeve shirt/jacket with a hood (or a cap/earband), slightly thicker fast-drying socks, maybe some vaseline for your face and lips if it's dry and windy (it's messy, but it'll prevent windburn)

Under 30 degrees: pants, warm gloves, two or three layers on top, warm socks, water resistant shoes (if there's snow), cap/hat and earband, vaseline for your face and lips

General considerations:
1. When you're running, it feels like it's about 20 degrees hotter than it is (except in your extremeties - ears/hands)
2. Invest in at least one of those hi-tech fast-drying shirts - they'll keep you cooler in the heat and warmer in the cold (they also chafe less). Ditto with socks. You can get away with cheap 99 cent gloves, if it doesn't get below freezing.
3. When in doubt, layer. You can always strip if it's too hot. Make sure you put your best layers closest to you. (It's better to have a hi-tech singlet underneath a cotton sweater than a hi-tech long-sleeve shirt over a cotton undershirt)
4. If you want to brave the cold rain, get a good jacket and water resistant shoes.
5. Glasses and visors of some sort can be good not only on sunny days, but also cold windy/rainy days.
