I'm thinking about having a Janeys revival night.

How many people out there are old enough to remember the legendary Gourock Hotel - what era did you go?

Under 18's
Joy
Eva
Other?

What's your fav Bay songs, or even just songs that remind you of those heady days

Here's a few;

Under 18's (1984-1988) - My unders days

1. Violent Femmes - Add It Up
2. Jonathan Richman - This Kind Of Music Is The Kind That I Like
3. Aretha Frankin - I Say A Little Prayer
4. Velvet Underground - Temptation (Inside Your Heart)

You would also have heard the Smiths, Cramps, Meteors, Spear Of Destiny, etc.

Eva (1990-1993) My DJ days

1. Stone Roses (obviously)
2. Freaky Realistic - Kootchie Ryder
...in fact I'm going to dig that out to play at Wordup tonight.
3. Definition of Sound - Wear Your Love Like Heaven

I have to give David Boag a nod here because he was the man who introduced me to soul - here's three Boag belters
Jackson 5 - ABC
Dexys - Soul Finger (and There There My Dear)

It might sound daft now but in the early days my music taste started about 1979-80 and I only went back to 1977. In fact for most of us Punk was year zero.

Until 89-90 and then it was .... Dance, soul, guitars, Manchester (all at once). A melting pot

Oh, must mention A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray and S'Express - Hey Music Lover at this point.

Right, thats me started, now it your turn.

I don't know if this was 80's, maybe late 70's funk.

Not trying to be smart since I only heard this recently (thanks to Alfie Brown).

Don't remember this at the Bay itself, but I taped it off Annie Nightingale (1982-3)when it was on a Sunday (I remember a Euro-vocal).

I'll add it to the list.

Are you still local?

November 12 2003, 2:14 AM

Hi

Imagine my surprise when I met McD at Flaming Lips gig and he handed me info on this website, and my greater surprise when I read the site......more memories than I could shake a stick at. Not just musical - formative stuff from women to friendships, drinking to playing in punk bands. Looking for gigs I was at (sadly including The Pastels, The Submarines and 5.30 as well as the slightly cooler MBV). Nice also to read about Scott McReady....hopefully still loving music as much as ever. Where are you these days, down south? To bring things full circle our drummer knows McD through work and we may be playing one of the nights in Nice'n'Sleazy. A full ahem, cough, years after playing The Bay, The Dugout etc. Great stuff, nice to be reminded of my younger days.

On a slightly stranger note someone had already signed on as 'Vandy' - ?!?! Who on earth is the man stealing my name? There was only one Vandy, good or ill.

Cheers
Scot

Hello Vandy!

How's tricks?

Yep, I'm living in London now - share a flat with Paul McLoone as it happens.

Have been here for about 4 years now, after 4 years living in Sheffield. (These years could be briefly described as Re-tox / De-tox).

I manage a boompty boompty boopmty boomp bish bash bosh 'ouse record label -End Recordings, label arm of a club called The End. Enjoying it.

Hows things yourself? Still flying the flag for leftfield American rock (and seriously shite football teams)?

Scott
PS
Went to see Dexys at Royal Festival Hall last night...fuckin' amazing...like the Brian Wilson gigs from last year where your really willing him on, praying that ta the very least he doesnt fuck up...Then when the songs come through better than you remember...well, it was just like Rocky 1, 2 & 3. But with better tunes.

Life and how to live it...

Married, living in Glasgow. Work as a finance officer for a charity. Play bass, sing, and write songs for a band....we are sort of like The Bathers meets americana meets Mercury Rev...maybe. I would suspect we are romantic and overtly sincere and thus at odds with contemporay mores. My own tastes are mainly classical music, some world (Brazilian - but not the pubic style - some gypsy etc), some electronica (whatever mates let me hear), left field-ish stuff with guitars, loads of more standard stuff involving guitars, and my all time hero(es) remain Mark Eitzel and Kristin Hersh. Will you attend this Janeys re-union should it happen?!?!

Classical Music eh? Are you sure?

Sure you've not just been buying 100 Great advert themes,3 CD's for a blue one at FOPP.

Or "The Best of Carl Orff - Classical Music Fir Schemies Like, Y'know, The Wan Frae The Omen. Magic. Vol 2".

Anyways...aye I'll definitely come up for it.

What I was thinking though is that if there's an Under 18's revival there should also be a revival for all the Tribe mob that battered folk outside.

Everybody buys a ticket for Janeys then a random 20% are refused entry for being pished.

They are then paired up with the opposite ticket number from the Bawbags Reunited gathering across the street (outside the old tourist info kiosk) and sent, quick smart, out to the train station car park for a mandatory kickin...

...but, heres the good part. This time justice prevails as the old adversaries are now 6 stone shrunken headed methadone addicts, giving the real ale drinking 30 something Smiths fans of the world a chance to eke out a little bit of revenge.

Or how about complimetary entry for anyone who's put on 10 stone or more?

And will everone got a special dispensation from their respective partners...For One Night Only You May Get Off With 5 Birds In One Night (Rubbing Fanny Outside Tights Optional)?

McD?

Hey Scot/Big Man/Vandy,

Wierd, I had the same problem....tried to log-in and I too already existed....who has stolen me? People in this goddam town will pinch anything.

I have lots of Bay Hotel memorabilia if anyone is interested. Mostly hangovers. And, bizarrely, teapots.

Good to see some familiar 'faces' here. Hope u are all well...

Actually, McD, I have loads of photos of gigs and the clubs, if you want to post any. May bring back some interesting memories; suppose the Bay was a bit like that old saying about the sixties....if you remember The Bay you weren't....uh...I forget.

I would come over for Janeys revival. I suggest the Hardy Boys play at it.

Re janeys...

playlist has forgot Bauhaus: Kick in the Eye, Bela Lugosi,
king kurt; zulu beat
cramps: the Crusher
monochrome Set: Jet Set Junta
James Taylor: BlowUp
The Jam; Precious
and of course ...the Meteors; I dont worry about it.

The Bay circa 84-89 was the best. Cornball as dejay and Hammil the friendly bouncer who took pieces of yellow pages as ticket.

Some of the best nights of my life in the Bay listening to McD and Shady after consuming dubious white powder in a wrap and drinking lots of beers.

A lot of great tunes mentioned that brought back that got me reminiscing and smiling. Another two that stick in my head when I think of the bay however are Groove is in the Heart by Deee-lite and All on you by Paris Angels.

Thanks for the memories.

and Shady.....the tribe were not the only ones who battered people outside :P
