Until the USA switches to a multi-party system, voting for a 3rd party is about as effective as peeing into the wind for getting change to happen. Breast freedom and top freedom, regardless of what some people may say, has everything! to do with our elected leaders. At the state level, legislators will pass or not pass laws restricting topfree rights, and the governors will have the power of veto. Most candidates would not risk pressing for topfreedom, but they do have the power to either take up or table or veto overly restrictive leglislation, such as that proposed in Kansas that would make simple nudity a sex crime felony. At the national level, presidents are the only ones who have the power to appoint supreme court nominees, and the Senators are the ones who have the power to OK the nominees or reject them.
Conservative supreme court members have a history of voting to restrict first amendment rights, including and especially topfree and nudity issues. Rehnquist and Thomas did not appear out of a vacuum, but rather were appointed because of their conservative ideology, and it was Rehnquist who specifically called nudity "an evil." He said that even if 50,000 consenting nude adults were gathered together in a football stadium with no one else present, it would still be evil and a crime. Yes, he used that exact analogy in his writing of a supreme court decision on nudity.
Topfreedom is only one of many issues that we all have for consideration in our voting tomorrow, but make no mistake about it, there is a gigantic difference between the two parties in regards to laws relating to topfreedom, and other first amendment rights. If one is a conservative on some other issues, it may trump one's concern for topfreedom, but one would have to be living in a cave the last 20 years to not realize that the court nominees and leglislators arising from the two parties are dramatically different. Democrats are unlikely to push for expanding nude beaches, but they are much less likely to press for arresting topfree women, and their nominees for judge positions will be more likely to protect freedom of expression, including topfreedom, and hey they might just have a brafree daughter to provide a postive example. |
