I too think it should be scrapped because it transmits germs and it is my understanding that the handshake did originate as you said, to show that one was unarmed.

Women tend not to shake hands and that works for me
I know one woman who does and she makes judgements on character based on the handshake. If the handshake is limp, she thinks she is dealing with a wimp.
