(CBS4) LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. Three weeks after a breastfeeding mother was cited for public indecency, she is still waiting for an official apology.
Dorian Ryan was breastfeeding her baby at Carter Lake in Larimer County when she was issued a ticket for exposing her genitals.
When Ryan learned that breastfeeding in public is protected under Colorado law, she alerted the county supervisor in charge of Carter Lake.
The supervisor found that the ticket was completely groundless and was quickly voided.
Ryan said she was warned about breastfeeding by the same park ranger a week before she was issued the ticket. She said she had every intention to be discreet, but was still told it was against the rules.
The County Parks district manager said the ranger is a new seasonal employee who was hired for the summer.
"It was a lack of judgement on the officer's part," said Dan Rieves of Larimer County Parks. "You can breastfeed your child, parks and open lands included."
The park manager said he's disciplined the ranger and trained his staff about Colorado's breastfeeding law.
Regardless, Ryan said she is still waiting for a formal apology the county promised her.
"It seems like a simple matter and I still don't have that assurance," Ryan said.
The district manager said he plans to mail the apology by Friday.
Ryan said she hopes her story helps other people understand that if you're allowed to be in a certain public place, you're also allowed to breastfeed there.
The Colorado law protecting breastfeeding went into effect last year.
