I don't think what I wrote above is inconsistent with what you are saying- yes- Japanese stuff- specifically cars and electronics WERE inferior in the 1960s- and were seen that way by the public. But Japanese quality continued to improve while American quality declined. I remember American cars of the 1970s were well known for poor performance and quality control and I think by the 1980s things had totally reverse- and Japanese products were seen a superior. Today TV stations are full of equipment made by Sony, Panasonic, NEC and other Japanese companies. That would have been unthinkable in the 1960s- but now it's considered professional grade stuff. And the most of the US companies that made TV broadcast equipment (and home TV sets) back then don't even exist anymore!
