Well yes, certainly technology is better today, although it's a funny thing- but you didn't miss things you didn't know about. We seem to manage quite well writing letters, using landline phones and listening to vinyl records.
But I certainly don't agree that in "every way we are better off in 2007 than at any time before". I don't think you are even old enough to remember life before the 1960s when things began going downhill.
My affinity for the 1950s is not just because it was the decade of my youth, but I think it was a golden time when we had sufficient amenities (nice cars, comfortable homes, adequate entertainment) and yet retained the civility and tranquility of older times- something I think you would like.
