I think that claim of 38 states goes back to when they were running 500-KW in the 1930s. Now a days there are so many stations and so much inference from power lines and various electronic gadgets and a digital system called IBOC that no stations have the range they use to have. Add to that the fact that FCC has let so many stations on previous clear channels- and the whole band has been ruined. Long range was the only thing AM had going for it and now it doesn't even have that. Radio in general is such crap now. If I want to hear music I listen old stuff from MP3s or the net.
