It's something no one wants to talk about- but frankly the Civil Rights movement of the '50s-'60s has been pretty much a failure. We have had integrated schools, non-discrimination laws and affirmative action programs for half a century now. Some blacks have done very well, we even have a black president- but many blacks are actually worse off now- despite all the educational and employment opportunities they have had. There seems to a attitude among black youth that going to school and making good grades is "uncool" and those who do are ridiculed and ostracized. I can think of no better example of the deterioration of black culture than their music- from the harmonious love-oriented Doo-Wop and gospel music of the '50s-'60s to the vulgar and violence filled Rap and Hip-hop of today. If Martin Luther King were alive now he would shake his head and wonder what went wrong. |
