I think you are painting with a too broad brush. I don't think abusive fathers are ever accepted as routine, but more of a tragedy.
As far as the civil rights movement goes, I can hardly consider it a failure when systematic oppression of African Americans has slowed considerably.
Also, there is one other point to consider: Many feel that things will not truly get better until reparations are paid.
Just something to chew on.
