Well, actually the Pilgrims came to this country so they could have an official religion, one of their own. To practice another religion in Massachusetts was a hanging offense. Of all the colonies, only Maryland had religious freedom and probably Pennsylvania. Here in Virginia, there was an established church. After the revolution, all those churches went through a crisis period for a while. But if you were far enough away from the big cities, none of that mattered. In fact, even religion itself wasn't as important. |
