You are correct; it isn't only religion (of a sort) that is being pushed on people but it has gotten worse in living memory. What is really being pushed, maybe, is a sort of nationalist religion that really has nothing to do with God or Christianity, not as I understand it. So now we have the pledge of allegience and the motto "In God We Trust." The curious thing is that only relatively recently have these things become official. The pledge was only made official in 1942 (with "under God" added in 1954) and "In God We Trust" was also only made the official motto in the 1950s, though the expression had been used on coins for a long time. |
