Its true Sony licensed a few others but not so many or as soon as JVC did. Certainly I remember going into stores in the early '80s and see 4 VHSs for every Beta.
I agree the longer playing time was a big factor- it was the only thing that Joe Q. Public could understand- He knew nothing about head velocity, video bandpass, chroma subcarriers and the like- but when the salesman said this VCR can recorder longer than that VCR so it must be better.
Once one system gained dominance a snowball effect took over as people brought VHS because thats what their friends had. And the war was lost. At least in the consumer market. But both Sony and JVC also had professional versions for TV stations. They use better tape and ran at much higher speeds to meet broadcast specs, but they use the same basic transports. There Sony won out because pros knew a superior system.
