I didn't even wear a helmet when I rode my bike ten years ago. It was getting important by the early nineties, I guess, because I used to put my kids into the Burley bike trailer and ride around Lacy and Olympia Washington when we were stationed up there, and people would yell out their car windows at me, "Put a helmet on those kids!"
I do remember wearing a lap belt in the back seat of my moms car in the late sixties and on from there. She was a stickler for having us strapped in. By the time I started having my own kids we had car seats. I was glad too. I can't imagine how moms were able to drive around alone with loose babies in the car.
But we used to ride around loose in cars and with no lid on while on our bikes all the time! I remember riding in the front seat of my grandmas car and if she would slam on her brakes her arm would come across my chest to hold me down. Remember that? Now they want to call you an unfit parent and take your kids away from you for doing the same things our grandparents did. Go figure! |
