Well I think you are exaggerating a bit, although as you point out- the general trend has been in these directions regardless of what party is in power. The Republicans are not at all innocent in the immigration problem- for years they were in full control and did absolutely nothing to stop it- and why? Because their big business constituents love the cheap labor! So like it or not immigration will continue no matter what party is in power. In fact recall that a major problems conservatives had with McCain was his liberal views on immigration and other things. In fact, other than on the war- McCain is practically a Democrat! He's toned down his views recently for the election but his pass voting record on things like taxes and social programs so align with the Democrats that in 2004 John Kerry even asked him to be his VP.
