I recently purchased a 2002 Protege LX. At speeds between 72-74MPH, and either keeping a constant speed or accelerating, I hear a high pitched whistling noise. It sounds like the noise you hear when the Emergency Broadcast System is testing on your television (only in a faint fashion). If I let off the gas even a little the noise stops. The noise doesn't appear to happen like this at any other speed.
This is in my opinion either a engine or transmission noise. The car has about 1,300 miles. The dealer said this is a "harmonic" noise and there is nothing they can do. I'm very disappointed in that this is the speed that I will do about 90% of my driving, and this noise will drive me totally crazy. Anyone have a similar experience?

Hey there.... i just recently purchased a 2002 Protege ES. Between 2000 and 2500 rpm, i hear a rattling sound every now and then. I too was told it is a harmonics problem. shrug
Keep hounding the dealer .... don't give in. look into your states Lemon Law as well. that's the best advice i can give ya...

i didnt get enough info about your problem.
i think the sound might come from the radio(alternator).
i have 2-626s. they are 95s. same year same look.
i m happy with my cars because they are easy to repair.
i am a half machenic, (do myself everything)
except the parts are expensive then the other imports,
mazda makes very reliable cars, believe me.
especially for the protege, millinia, and 929 they are the best of mazda. others are uncomparable to the other imports.
once again, your pro ES is the best quality eco car amoung the other competitors. it beats civic and corolla.

hi,
Just bought the 2002 Protege5. I noticed the exact same problem this past weekend. Same relation to the accelerator etc.
I will be taking it up with my dealer in a couple of weeks. Let me know if you find out anything, I will do the same.
