I have a 2001 2.0 LX. The only way to change the oil filter is to put it on a lift or drive it up on ramps. The filter is located underneath almost directly in the center at the rear of the engine. The original filter was painted black so it was hard to spot initially. The best replacement is a Madza filter or a Purolator or Purolator Pure One available at Pep Boys. Also, careful when draining the oil....there is a washer on the drain plug which I managed to drop in the drain pan.

Also, as it is your first change, beware the filter is on tight!!! with no room for monkeying around. save your self the time and headache and get a plier type filter wrench. forget the binding metal loop, and circle kind, there's no room for those. I used a penzoil plier-type filter wrench that I got at kragen.

Agree with all of the comments and suggestions. I had a 92 Protege LX and the oil filter location was the same. Even when using a high lift, I had to insert by entire arm up next to a hot exhxaust pipe to get to the filter.
