I have an 89 b2200 droped on rims, engine has 166,000 but was rebuilt 30,000 ago. It leaked about a quart of oil a day so I replaced all new seals. Truck is a little faster but my motor is much louder. Not in a bad way but like from my air intake. Wich is custom. only problem is my lifter is nocking. So I will change it. Any body got any tips, and or know of any way to go peformance on this. thanx James

Well lifter noise is typical of Mazdas. There is a lot of talk about what to do about it. I started running a thicker oil to help the engine from overheating, which also stopped some of the lifter noise. If you have a lifter ticking it will need to be replaced. Some ppl take the lifters off of an older 626 which are lash adjust and use that. Personally I would stick with the hydrolic unless you plan on putting a larger cam in. Mazda made aftermarket hydrolic lifters for the miata with larger passages to help solve this problem but I have no clue as to if they are the same part or interchangeable. As for a performance upgrade, unless you want to have someone custom make some roller rockers and lifters, you stuck with either the stock lifters or lash adjust off of a 626. I have been looking for a while to find roller rockers and lifters that will interchange but with no luck.

There is a fresh air intake system that comes on a buick that fits up to the RX-7 4 barrel carburator, but does not fit the stock B2200 carb.

solution to lifter noise

Next time you change oil, put in 3qts of good quality oil and 1qt of an additive called Resilone. I'm not sure of the spelling. Do this every time you change oil. There's a build up in the oil passages leading to the lifters. It works great on my B2200. Especially after freeway driving. The lifter knocks are gone on mt truck........

Just got through total rebuild of engine including new lifters and rocker arm shafts. Cranked it up and thought I had a lifter noise. Tick, Tick, Tick. Sounded very mechanical. Finally listened through a short length of heater hose and traced noise to the rear air-injection manifold flare fittings ( which feeding into the exhaust manifold.) Removed air-injection manifold and verified that the rear flair was cracked 3/4 way around. Braized up (only lasted 10 min.) but confirmed this as source of "lifter noise." Got new manifold on order.
