MX5 pop-up, head lights don't stay up!

I have a 1991 UK spec MX5 with intermittent pop-up headlights. Either they don't pop up or pop down on their own. The lights do come on and can be poped up using the retracter switch on the centre console.

Any ideas or know where I can get a circuit diagram?
