MAZDA 1990 626 auto engine surging

hello i have a 1990 626 dx auto with 200.000+ miles, here what the engine does, i start it up..runs fine , till i drop it
in drive,then it wants to stall & die,,if i floor the gas pedal i can get past it, but if i drive at 15 or 20 mph, or let the RPMS drop down it realy cuts out ,,like the ignition is being switched on & off..weird i did a EGR test its fine
dint find any air leaks either,,any ideas..???im open

Check the rubber air boot from the air filter housing to the throttle body. Easy test is to start the car and with it idling twist this boot gently. If the engine dies you have a crack and need to replace the boot. What happens is the engine torques over when you put it in gear and opens the hole allowing unmetered air in. The mixture goes very lean and the engine dies. Good luck.
