| I've got a '91 Protege, 4WD, 5-speed, that I bought this summer. It's started having this problem where every once in a while, the car stops responding to the accelerator--in fact, giving it gas makes the RPMs go down. When I pull over and turn it off and then turn it back on, it runs fine again. Until the next time. I'm thinking this is a fuel pump problem, but I'd like to make sure before I invest in a new pump. Any thoughts on what's causing this? |

I had the same problem in my 91 protege dx. Well what mine turned out to be was it being older and sitting it had settament in the tank and got sucked up into the fule filter and plugged up everything and even plugged the filter in the gass tank we had to drop the tank and flush it and out and change all the screens and fuel filter and the fule filters r not cheap. unless u go the cheap route and put in a inline but the big black ones that come from mazda themselves r like 50 to 75 dollars. Well after we did that it still ran like crap because there was still some in the old lines but over time it worked out. Plus if u drop the tank u might as well get a new fuel pump becuase dropping the tank is horriable unless u own a lift so once it is down i reconmend just change it less problemns in the future. I hoped this helps. | |
