I have a 1999 Mazda 626 4cyl engine with 45000. Sometime the check engine light come on and will stay on for a while but then it goes out for a while. The car is running just fine and I checked the room fuses they suggest in the owners manual but all are okay. Yhe next thing they tell you to do is to take it to your dealer so they can rob me guess. It's been doing this now for about four months and I haven't had one ounce of trouble from the car. Any ideas???

Try taking your spark plugs out of the sockets and see if they are dry or wet. I had a problem where my car wasn't running right and the light was on, but the problem was as simple as having water on the spark plugs. There are 4 of them so check all of them. Hope this works.

I have a 93 Mazda 626 V6 and my engine check light comes on too. It was diagnosed as the 02 sensors being either defective or needed to be replaced. The diagnostics check is around $30-60 (depends where you go). The link below might help.

The 02 sensors are quite expensive. I haven't replaced them yet for this reason but, from what I hear once replaced, the light will disappear. Hope this helps.

That happened to me also, but the thing is, you won't
be able to pass your emmission test with the check light on. You don't necessarily have to go to a dealer to get diagnostics or repair. Any garage that services foreign parts can plug into your computer. It could be an actual problem. If you want to register your car, you should take care of it or sell it. If you unhook the battery, it will go out, but if the problem still exists, it will come back on.

Power Steering Pump

There are more things than the pump that can cause hard steering. Most common is the pump belt and/or low power steering fluid. For that matter, lack of lubrication of any of the various parts that move when you steer the car can contribute to excessive steering effort. The steering rack is one item that's frequently overlooked, so be sure to check it too.

If it turns out that you do need a new pump, Napa and most of the other parts suppliers should be able to get one for you. Wrecking yards are another source.

most likely is ur gas, if u buy poor quality gas,, (some places have condensation/water in their storage tanks) it will affect the emission sensor in ur engine/exhaust, and make ur check engine light go on.
