this is a 2000 2.5 L 626 engine. the manual says replace timing belt at 60,000 miles. is this really necessary ? estimates are $350 to do this. HELP. Thanks...

You can usually make it to 70k but yes it has to be replaced.

My local Mazda dealership wants $ 525 for the same service on a 99 626 V6, which has the same engine and belt. I decided to do mine at 90K miles. If the belt breaks on this engine, no valve or piston damage will occur - you will only get stranded. I will take my chances. I intend to replace the cam sprocket seals and front crankshaft seal along with the belt. In about 10 states Mazda replacement interval for this belt is 105K miles.
