i have a 2002 mazda protoge p5 5 speed with 51,000 high way miles. my car when its cold the idles surges up & down and even so when the car is warmed up. i checked the coolent level and made sure it was full. The rpm goes below the 1000 range close enough to the point the car shuts down. I have to rev the gas pedal to keep the car at idle while waiting for the light to change. the car has the check engine light on but i did notice that the car when it first started to show sign the light did not come on till 60 miles after. I verified this because i reset the light and the light did not come on after i put 50 or so miles. I had a diagnostic snap on 2500 series tool used to check the icu and it read the " p0401 Insufficient egr flow detected, P0300 Random misfire dectected" Can any one help me out by telling me if they had any similar symptoms with their car and what the fix was or if they know what can cause the egr to have imsufficient flow or cause ramdom missfire? please be aware that the model of the car does not mean anything for the 2.0 litter engine used in the p5 is the same as other mazda vehicle using the same engine so if you had a similar problem with your vehicle with the same engine class and know of the fix please let me know?

thanks!!!!!

Hi,
I have been having exactly the same problems with my 1986 madzda 626. The idle is crap, the revs go below zero as soon as you start to slow down so I have to keep pulling the choke in and out. Is this a common thing? I've had the idle and carby checked out and had it all cleaned out but it made very little difference. I know my car is old but it's SO annoying!!
