Millenias are junk! GOING TO THE CRUSHER

I have been watching this forum for several months because I have a Millenia that seems to have most of the problems expressed, especially stalling without any warning and leaving us stranded almost every time we drive it. It is a 95 2.5 with only 54,000 miles. I have tried most of the suggestions found in forums: DISTRIBUTOR, MAF, O2 SENSORS, FUEL PUMP ETC. including several trips to the dealer. ALMOST THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS LATER IT IS STILL A CRAP SHOOT EVERY TIME WE DRIVE IT. Many of the power options do not work, and I can't even get a used car dealer to take it on trade. I HAVE OWNED 16 CARS AND THIS MILLENIA HAS TO BE THE WORST ONE EVER. ON ANOTHER FORUM I SAW WHERE A GUY HAD HIS CAR CRUSHED. GUESS I'M HEADED TO THE SALVAGE YARD TOO! NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY A MAZDA ESPECIALLY A MILLENIA..........

In addition to previous problems described I've just been advised of another major one today. While my son was driving the car, the brakes failed completely. That seals this car's fate. It is going to be sent for scrap ASAP!

Do you want to sell any parts from it first?

Mechanic who formerly worked at a Mazda dealer advised that my problem is most likely still a distributor. Even though I recently installed one, it was re-built. He says 1 in 3 rebuilt units are usually faulty and I probably got one of these. So............am trying a new one as my last resort.

Sold my Millenia for 500 dollars

I agree that the 95 Millenia is junk! I had all the problems you could possibly imagine and just sold mine for $500 dollars. I even left all the expensive new parts I put on it. Distributor, mass air flow, O2 sensors, traction control Etc. Etc. Saw it stalled out on the highway last week, so the new owner hasn't solved problems with it either!

Just a wild shot, but it is possible that all of these problems may be related to some defect within the wiring harness itself, or perhpas poor grounding of the vehicle. Sometimes adding a grounding strap or two to tie the chassis to the engine block can eliminate electrical nuisance problems.

Did you check every ground strap and wire on the vehicle? Sometimes corrosion builds up under the wire terminal and this will cause intermittent grounding and perhaps could explain unexpected and sudden ignition system failures.

Here is what I would do: Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery and the engine block and carefully inspect the lugs for signs of corrosion. Clean the lugs, or replace the cable. Make usre you tighten all connections properly when reinstalling the cable. Look for other small grounding wires in the engine compartment where they are terminated to metal chassis parts. Loosen these and clean them and reattach them. A good shop manual wold help to locate these grounds. My 83 Merecedes 300 SD has at least eight of these and they are clearly identified in the shop manual.

You can also test wiring harness by measuring resistance through each wire from end to end. The resistance should be very small, no more than 1 ohm.
I would chack the part of harness that attaches to the distributor.

Beginning to think this car is going to drive me crazy. Thanks for your suggestion.........I had all the grounds and wires checked and just for good measure installed another distributor (the third one). Car ran fine today for 200 miles. Quit once at a stop sign but started up immediately. Before it would take anywhere from 30 seconds to 20 minutes before we could get it started again. Keeping my fingers crossed that I finally got a good distributor..........but still not sure what caused it to stall.

From the tone of his posts I would say that he will give you the remote and the whole car for free if you only get it out of his sight.

Saga may be over

My saga of unreliability with my 95 Millenia 2.5 may have finally come to an end. The problems I mentioned in previous posts (distributor and brakes) may finally be solved. This car has given me so much grief I am reluctant to declare it as clear of problems. However, I have just completed 1000 miles without any occurrances or being left stranded like so many times before. Tried so many fixes that it is difficult to say what the primary source of trouble was but as far as I can tell it was probably a combination of faulty distributors, cap and rotor, corroded ground points and a faulty ABS sensor. Seems like when I threatened to have it sent to he wreckers it straightened itself around. In any case the car now works great and actually is a pleasure to drive. I always said the Millenia is a wonderful car to drive (as long as it is working properly). To those of you who responded to my various posts, "thank you". Your knowledge was helpful and always appreciated ! For now the car has earned itself a reprieve from the dreaded crusher !
