HELP!!

I have a 1990 626LX with an automatic tranny. The transmissions hold function comes on and off randomly while driving. It seems to be an electrical problem as it is easily triggered by an electrical load on the system such as pulling up on the power window switch when teh window is already fully raised. I've even had my aftermarket stereo trigger it when the music level is high. This problem makes the car almost undrivable and as my wife and I have already spent several hundred dollars to fix other problems with this car we don't have a lot of funds to fix this problem. the electrical diagram in my Haynes manual is pretty much useless, doea anyone know how to fix this problem?

I had a similar problem a few years ago... but with my GSM digital mobile phone. When the phone rang, the computers did strange things.

A properly installed car kit with an outside, on-glass aerial, fixed the problem.

I don't know how your power amp is connected to the electrical system of your car or where you have mounted the amp... but I have a Sony 1,000W RMS monster stereo (which can draw up to 68 Amps at peak load) in my Mazda GDER Capella. The amp is mounted in the trunk (bolted to the back of the back seat) and it is wired directly to the battery (a diesel truck battery-13 plate NS70L, which was the biggest I could fit in the available space) with high current -almost arc welding- cables (to overcome the voltage drop) with gold terminals and fast blow fuses. And I don't have any problems. The huge battery capacity, you see, smooths out the load.

I don't know, but I suspect that you are simply running out of electrical capacity... and because of the load, the available voltage is dropping and the computer is getting the sulks because of it.

I can only suggest that you might look closely at the way the amp is wired into the cars electrical system and try a bigger capacity battery.

An automotive electrician who knows how to work a clamp meter ought to be able to sort out the load issues in a few seconds.

Thanks for the tip

Hi,

Thanks for the tip but I'm not sure the amp is the problem. I've tried removing the fuse from the amp and driving the car - it made no difference with the hold popping on and off. However, I do seem to remember that this problem did not crop up until some time after I had upgraded the stereo system but that may be a coincidence. Still I'll recheck the wiring - maybe something is shorting out.

Any other suggestions - anyone?

Update - OK, I think it's been almost a month now since I last posted about this problem. After my last post I went under the dash on the drivers side and checked for loose or corroded wires. I didn't find anything directly but I may have done SOMETHING as the problem has not reoccured since! Since then I have driven the car daily without an incident - I have even gone so far as to test it by trying to raise the driver window past it's stop, formerly a surefire way to trigger the problem, but now does nothing! The only other thing I can factor in is a change in the weather, it got much cooler around that time. Anyway it may be worth your while if you are having a similar problem to try disconnecting and reconnecting the wires underneath the steering column - don't take out the whole dash, just the lower part and the cover above the pedals. There are several wires to play with.

Good luck!!!
