Stay away from the automatic transmission at all costs !!
They are notoriously bad.
Apparantly the 5 speed tranny is fine but I have read tons and tons of reports of expensive repair jobs on low milage 626's 1993 onwards.
I almost got sucked in this weekend on buying a a 1995 626. It was a 4 cylinder automatic.
I was driving to the bank to get money to buy the car when the O/D light started flashing.
I called theMazda dealer and his words were "uh-oh" and then he said ... let me guess ... it's a 4 cylinder automatic right ?
Apparently that flashing O/D light is the prelude to a huge repair bill.
I was spared this nightmare.
Hope you get this in time !

It may be interesting to note that to rebuild the crappy 626 auto transmission actually costs more than to rebuilt a Mercedes Benz 300 SD auto tranmission. (About $ 2500 for Mazda vx $ 2000 for Mercedes). Incidentally, the Benz transmission is a good transmission but as all automatics it eventually needs overhaul around 150-200K miles.
One would assume that when Mazda adopted the Ford Pinto quality throw-away auto transmission in Mazda 626 4 cylinder, they would give it appropriately low price for both the replacement unit and rebuilding one. Wrong!
