Any suggestions on how to avoid the $500 repair bill to get the "Check Engine Light" off? They ran an $80 computer test and told me that the emissions are too high and i have to do x, y and z to get it fixed.

I had a similar problem, check engine light was on.
I went to Mazda of Hyannis, they checked my car and said that nothing was wrong, a day later the light was back on, I spent a hundred bucks for them to tell me that I needed an o2 sensor,.,I already knew that!
If you need an o2 sensor(which you probably do mines a '97) plan on a 175-, dont let them charge you to diagnose it, then charge you to install one.
to turn off that Check ENG light, disconnect your battery for a minute or two, then restart your car and run it in for about 5 mins. mazda charged me a hundred bucks to do this. sometimes an o2 sensor starts acting up, but still works for a while, but once that code is in your comp. that light stays on!
I really hate that mazda and ford are in bed together, they have the worst service depts@!
