You obviously need to remove the center crankshaft bolt. The easiest way to remove this one is with an air impact wrench because if you use an ordinary breaker bar/socket, the crank will turn. There may also be several small bolts holding the belt pulley to the harmonic balancer. You remove these bolts with an ordinary ratchet and a socket. Then you may have to use a harmonic balancer puller to remove it if it will not slip off. I believe that there is a key on the crankshaft securing the balancer to the shaft to prevent it from turning.

If you have no access to an air wrench, another way
is to put your socket and breaker bar on the large center nut and just crank the engine.
one caveat...
This creates incredible torque, and whatever is in its path WILL yeild. Best to put the wrench against the ground before cranking.

The "engine cranking "trick described above has been suggested by the anonymous Mazda mechanic who disappeared from this board several weeks ago because somebody dared argue with him about an inconsequential issue.
However, I would caution strongly against attempting any such tricks, as you can dmage the starter gear or the flywheel gear in such an attempt, especially if the breaker bar is not firmly resting on a block of wood or similar surface. Also, you must make sure your ignition is disabled so you do not accidentally start the engine. It is much better to rent a portable air compressor and an impact wrench for the day. Many tool rental places rent them. Also, you could try to buy an inexpensive electric impact wrench. Some of them are capable of 200 ft-lbs toruqe which should be sufficient to loosen most crankshaft bolts. There are few that are torqued to something like 300 ft-lbs (e,g, GM 3.8 liter V6 engine), but not on Mazdas I believe.
I also know of cases where people ruined harmonic wheel balancers by trying to pry on the spokes of the blancers while turning the center bolt with a long breaker bar. Some harmonic balancers are two piece bonded concentric circles with a strip of rubber holding them together. If you shear through this rubber by applying twisting motion to the center nut while inserting abar through the balancer spokesb, you have just ruined the balancer and will have to replace it. I do not believe Mazda 626 uses this kind of harmonic balancer, but beware that this is a poissibility on some engines. My 1967 ford Thunderbird has such a harmonic balancer.

I am not he, the tweaked mechanic.
Just a method i've used. Haven't (to my knowledge)
torn anything up. Good call on the rental though,
that hadn't occured to me; couldn't cost too much i wouldn't think.
