Advice needed re 1990 Bongo- turbol diesel 4wd auto

I recently purchased a 1990 Bongo wagon. Head gasket has blown- looking for new engine- and seeking advice re the possibility of installing a more powerful engine and manual gearbox. Can anyone help? all advice gratefully recieved.
