I was wondering how much a 2004 tribute can tow? Its a 4x4 automatic. The dealer had said 3,000lbs, but it looks like the book says 3,500. Are these also slightly conservative numbers? I am looking to tow a boat that is right at 3500lbs. It would only be about 3 miles that it gets towed in each direction, from house to drop off point.
All help is appreciated. Thanks!

From what I've read, it's supposed to be 3500. My guess is that the figures are probably slightly conservative to help curb the tendency owners have to create problems for themselves by overloading their vehicles.

Towing with a Tribute

The Tribute will tow up to 3500lbs "if" equipped with the "towing package" which consists of an additional engine/oil cooler package. Without this optional factory or dealer installed package it is rated to tow 2000lbs and towing more weight without the optional package will void the powertrain warranty. I have installed an excellent hitch from Reese which is made only for the Tribute and Ford Escape and is rated for 3500lbs. Be careful on this one as my 2004 Tribute is currently in the service bay at my local dealer having the entire transmission replaced after only 12000 KMS and the dealer wanted details on my towing habits. I only tow a snowmobile trailer with two
sleds which are under 1400lbs total but you have to be careful.

The model # of the 3500lbs rated hitch for the Tribute is R33039 and it is made by Reese and sells for $129.00. It is a very easy install and takes 45 - 60 mins if you have the right tools.
