Air conditioning not working, but condensor is okay

I've taken my car to Roppel's, which specializes in air conditioning problems. The outcome is that there is nothing wrong with my air conditioning itself. Here are the symptoms.
95 626 4cyl m/t
The air conditiioning will work at fast speeds such as when you are on an expressway.
If the car is idling or going at slower speeds such as up to 45mph, it kills the engine when you turn the air conditioner on.
The idle is fine on the car.
Has anyone experienced a similiar problem or have any clue to what may be wrong?
I will take it to another shop soon, but would like to have an idea of what may be wrong.

They had to have tested the A/C with the engine running in order to make the determination that it was OK. They couldn't have done this if the engine stalls at idle, as one of the tests involves measuring the temp out of the vents at idle. There's something missing here.
