Hi I'm new to this forum. The 89 Mazda 626 is my gf's car. I'm hoping someone has seen this problem before and can offer some advise.

The car is a 1989 Mazda 626, no turbo, no AC, 5 speed. Before I came on the scene, my gf said that the radiator fan was always running. Hot or cold.

I replaced the Fan Water Thermo Sensor/Switch on the cold side of the thermostat housing because the insulator or porcelin was broken. Jiggling the connector made the fan turn on and off. I also replaced the Thermostat and the Water Thermo Switch at the bottom of the rad because I was trying to disconnect the wire connectors and pulled the guts out of the sensor due to a very corroded connector.

Now, the rad fan turns on when the coolant is cold and/or has not been released by the thermostat. As soon as the thermostat opens, the rad fan shuts off.

I checked the operation of the Cooling Fan Relay 1, which was the only cooling fan relay I found on this car. Cleaned up the points some, plugged it back in and started the car. At first, it seemed like the coil in the relay didn't have enough enery to keep the points seperated. I manually kept persuading the point to stay open. Well it did. Now, when the thermostat opens, the coil stays energized and doesn't release the points.

I would really appreciate any suggstions, advise, theories or fixes.

Thanks.

Oh, one more question. Where should the dial be on the coolant temp gauge under normal operating conditions? In this case, the dial sits in the middle or slightly higher on the guage.
